They predicted snow for Denver today but it's a gorgeous fall day so I'm going to take advantage of it.

For those of you online, here's an open thread.

Sunday Evening Open Thread

If you've had your fill of politics this weekend, here's something heartwarming and completely different to read.

In the beginning, there was a boy, a girl and an apple. He was a teenager in a concentration camp in Nazi-controlled Germany. She was a bit younger, living free in the village, her family posing as Christians. Their eyes met through a barbed-wire fence and she wondered what she could do for this handsome young man.

She was carrying apples, and decided to throw one over the fence. He caught it and ran away toward the barracks. And so it began.

Herman and Roma Rosenblat celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this summer.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

Saturday Open Thread

The Gators' season is on the line tonight as they host LSU. This is a must win game if their season is to be a success. Meanwhile, the world economy is on the line this weekend as the G-7 ministers meet in Washington. Krugman is not inspiring confidence with his take on the proceedings. Might be time to relearn these lines:

They used to tell me I was building a dream, and so I followed the mob, . . . They used to tell me I was building a dream, with peace and glory ahead, Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread? Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time. Once I built a railroad; now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?

It's the end of the World as we know it:

Surviving the Bush Economy: An Open Thread

A Sarah Palin enthusiast says:

“I’m a grandmother trying to put money away for retirement. I fear what America’s going to face with Barack Obama as president,” said Diana Ross, 59, who said she works for a company that helps provide apartments in Columbus to low-income residents.

I hate to break this to you, Diana Ross, but George Bush is president and your retirement investments are of questionable value thanks to Republican governance.

In the spirit of optimism, this open thread is brought to you by the other Diana Ross performing Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive."

Dow Plunges

I am about to get on a plane to New York, but my flight is delayed. So I pop open the computer and see the Dow lost nearly 700 points and 7.3% of its value. Oy! Talk about suffering for your sins. Atonement is seemingly out of reach at the moment.

On this high holy day for Judaism, let us pray for better days ahead and for atonement for our sins as a Nation. Or not. As you wish.

In any event this is another Open Thread.

The Polls - 10/9

Obama is way ahead. RCP has them here, except for the DKos/R2000 poll, which has Obama up 10 (Gallup also has Obama up by double digits.) It's over.

Dow Plunging: Down 400+, Er 500+ . . .

Boy that bailout really did the trick didn't it? Dow down 400+.

Anyone have any cheery news? How about this - in 106 days, George W. Bush will no longer be the President of the United States.

Here is a joke to cheer you up, from Annie Hall:

Two elderly women are at a Catskills mountain resort, and one of 'em says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know, and such small portions." Well, that's essentially how I feel about life. Full of loneliness and misery and suffering and unhappiness, and it's all over much too quickly.

Didn't that cheer you up?

This is an Open Thread.
