    From the Brad Blog:

Here we go again. Completely unverifiable touch-screen voting machines, in this case, made by ES&S, flipping votes from one candidate to another. Yet again.

touched the Republican first? When you touch it, does it auto register and you can't change it? If the machine isn't working, why aren't they shutting  it down and using a provisional ballot or another machine? I'd be raising a stink and demanding a paper ballot, myself.

With early voting, if they are having problems, they should start printing more provisional ballots. Hopefully, people won't just complain for the next couple weeks.

    No problem (none / 0) (#15)
by Lora on Sat Oct 18, 2008 at 08:02:28 PM EST
Oh, there's no problem, according to the (Republican) election officials.  It's all the voters' fault.  You see, they're not doing it right.  And stories like these shouldn't be published because they might scare people away from the polls.

(And never mind that a team of researchers at UCSB demonstrated how vote-flips similar to these can still count for the OTHER candidate, even when the flipped vote was supposedly remedied.)

    Parent

Don't they have to have paper ballots (none / 0) (#17)
by nycstray on Sat Oct 18, 2008 at 08:12:10 PM EST
available? GOTV efforts should include telling people to vote by paper ballot. Report those in charge to higher authorities and/or the media if they keep saying their no problem. It's common knowledge there IS a problem or 20. If they are going to the media, is the media going to the suspect machines?

Nobody should give a f*** what either party says if they are claiming there is no problem. investigations by independent sources should be the voice, not anyone that has a stake in the outcome.

I couldn't agree with you more.  It's starting to happen more and more.  People are standing up and demanding that funny voting be investigated.

Check out this wonderful video of voters in Pima, Arizona, who are not going to be assuaged by officials in charge saying that a funny election is not worth investigating, or that their hands are tied.

Caveat: the post is a plea to help the campaign of a Republican county attorney.  If you scroll down to the video, you will see (IMO) a remarkable example of people not taking a BS "no" for an answer.

You will also see how difficult it is to "recount" paper ballots, even when the paper back-up exists.

The election system is broken, and it is up to us to fix it.

You know he and ESPN stole Peyton's Heisman. :)

About Berry, he's a great kid and the best TN player since Peyton, I think. He was a freshman All American and will be a first team AA on a crappy TN team this year.

We play arch rival and #2 Alabama next week so I have to get my feel good moments when I can. I'm going to the game next week. That's loyalty when you consider how far I will have to walk to get to the stadium. The Bama fans are trying to buy all the tickets from the disgruntled UT fans and embarrass us by having so much crimson in the stands. I have to do my duty, wear orange, and bear it.
