Perspectives On Sexism

John Cole of Balloon Juice is a a fervent Obama supporter. One of the most fervent in my estimation.

He writes a post today that is interesting in terms of its Rashomon-like quality about things political. But most importantly to me, it also is telling evidence of the malign acceptance of sexism and misogyny that pervades our society. John writes:

Whether you are elated, angry or sad tonight, do us all a favor and show each other and our candidates a little respect.

NBC's Pathology: Clinton Hate Trumps Obama Love

NBC's terrible trio of Olbermann, Russert and Matthews report that Obama is none too pleased that the Media is STILL obsessed with Hillary Clinton. But here's the funny part - the Media's behavior is ALSO Hillary Clinton's fault.

They are truly incorrigible. It strikes me that Clinton as VP would be perfect for NBC. They could keep their programming exactly the same. Olbermann could continue to do his half an hour of negative news about Clinton, Oddball, Worst Person and a lame comedian. Easy.

Nice post from Barb at daily kos.

Tuesday Afternoon Open Thread: Running on Empty

Hillary may be running on empty, but as of now, she's still running.

I predict she will win South Dakota and come within 6 points in Montana.

This is another open thread.

Take the poll below on when the nomination will be decided:

One Of The Problems With The Media

Michael Tomasky is one of the better political reporters you will find. Smart, generally fair and well informed. Here, he writes a decent column on Obama's task to unify the Democratic Party and the DNC RBC meeting this Saturday. I have my quibbles with his opinions expressed in the column but I have a real problem with his ignorance of certain facts. Tomasky also wrote this:

A woman in the audience yelled, apropos of what I'm not sure: "What about Iowa? New Hampshire? South Carolina?"

It bothers me that Tomasky did not know why the woman yelled that. Of course I do not expect respected members of the Media to read my rants about the fact that DNC Rule 11, concerning the primary timing schedule, was violated by Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. But he was at the hearing and must have heard Carl Levin's presentation on the subject. [More...]

Obama Blog: Let's Unify

NOTE: My original title to this post was "Obama blog "Let's Unify, You Lying Idiots!" It was deemed inappropriate for this blog and thus was edited to the current title.

It took some chutzpah for this blogger to write this post:

We have to reunite our party in time to successfully take on John McCain. [...] Hillary and her team have successfully changed the national mood, of Hillary's supporters, at least, from one of disappointment that their candidate lost, to one of outright anger . . . Yeah, there's been some sexism by irrelevant third parties, but I just don't [care] . . .

(Emphasis supplied.) Ok, I pulled an Aravosis there, he did not say "care." But then again, the blogger has never been married to the truth when it comes to Hillary. He is still at it today, falsely calling Hillary a liar. But oh btw, we have to unify. That blogger is just shameless and disrespectful of the truth. He is calling for unity? Please spare us your "calls for unity." Some of us hear enough insults as it is.

More Deep Thoughts

Atrios writes:

Deep Thought

If the fine people of Puerto Rico don't vote for Obama in November, he's doomed.

Here's a deep thought - Democrats making fun of the votes of the American citizens in Puerto Rico is not going to help Barack Obama win the votes of Americans citizens from Puerto Rico residing in Florida, New York, Massachusetts and yes, even in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I expect this type of stuff from NBC, not from so called progressive blogs. Yes, I found it offensive.

Huge Box Office Stats for "Sex and the City" Opening

Women came out in droves this weekend for the opening of the Sex and the City movie.

The romantic comedy, based on HBO’s long-running television series of the same name, unexpectedly overtook the latest “Indiana Jones” movie at the domestic box office, bringing in an estimated $55.7 million since opening with midnight shows on Thursday, according to Warner Brothers., which released the film.

...85 percent of the ticket buyers [were] women, many viewing in groups — brought the film about $26 million in sales on Friday.

It was the largest weekend opening ever for a movie with a female lead. The numbers were a big surprise:

“It’s a cultural phenomenon; it’s an absolutely incredible opening,” said Dan Fellman, Warner’s president for theatrical distribution...

Unity

I am amazed at the view expressed by Obama supporters that unifying the Democratic Party is a problem for Hillary Clinton. Like me, they all expect Barack Obama to be the nominee, but they insist that the problem of unifying the Democratic Party belongs to Hillary Clinton. This is an incredibly obtuse view. Obama is going to be the candidate who will win or lose in November. It will be HIS job to unify the Party. Ezra Klein does not see it that way:

[There is an] authentic, deep anger among Clinton supporters. And that's not a problem the Rules Committee can resolve. This one is up to Clinton herself.

Um no. That is up to the likely nominee, Barack Obama. It will be his campaign this Fall. Not Hillary Clinton's campaign.

POST SCRIPT: And here is Meteor Blades berating angry Clinton supporters. There is a winning strategy. Not. Unity? Not hardly. And maybe never if people like Ezra Klein and Meteor Blades have their way. Yelling at people who consider themselves aggrieved is not exactly a smart way to bring them back in the fold. Time for some OBAMA supporters to grow up.

The Epitaph

Via Political Wire:

"My momma taught me to play by the rules and respect those rules. My mother taught me, and I'm sure your mother taught you, that when you decide change the rules, middle of the game, end of the game, that is referred to as cheatin'."

-- Donna Brazile, quoted by NBC News.

The DNC Rules and Bylaws committee did not change the rules yesterday, They did not even pretend to follow them. What the RBC did yesterday simply is not allowed by the DNC Rules. There is not a person in the world that can say that RBC played by the rules. So Donna, what would your momma call that?

The Media And Michigan And Florida

I turned on the TV this morning and came across MSNBC and Mika Brzezinski was playing host. And she has Mike Barnicle, and later Chris Matthews on, and she wants to ask about the impact of Rev. Pfleger. Being Grade A Hillary Haters, they were not bothered by Pfleger's comments about Hillary Clinton and did not want to talk about Pfleger, treating Brzezinski with a disrespect that was simply of a piece with the nasty sexism that MSNBC has generally fostered. A sad but expected episode in a long litany of sexism from MSNBC. They just have embraced their inner pig. And NBC is fine with it. But here is what gets me - they pretended as if they wanted to talk about something actually important - like Michigan and Florida.

This is what burns me up - there is not a NBC newsreader or bloviator - I know for sure Mike Barnicle and Chris Matthews have not - who has taken the time to actually learn the facts about the Florida and Michigan situation. NOT one. Now NBC has one of the sharpest guys around as political director in Chuck Todd. Chuck knows the whole story. I KNOW he does. But either Chuck is not imparting his knowledge on the Michigan and Florida situation to the NBC newsreaders and bloviators or they do not want to hear it. [More...]
