Late night: The Shape of Things To Come

A consensus choice between me, Shelby Sadler and Andrew Travers -- a reporter for the Aspen Daily News and our resident 27 year old DJ. (Anita's already asleep but she would agree.)

This is an open thread. I'll be back in Denver tomorrow and will check in tomorrow night.

Don't bet the mortgage payment on any horse to win the Triple Crown. It hasn't happened since Affirmed won it all in 1978. Big Brown was this year's hope.

Long Island's favorite horse failed miserably in his quest to become the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years when he pulled up and finished last in a huge upset in the 140th Belmont Stakes on Saturday at Belmont Park.

On the other hand, betting the mortgage payment on the Belmont winner, Da'Tara, would have returned a nice profit at 38-1. (TalkLeft does not endorse gambling with your mortgage money.)

Saturday Afternoon Open Thread

I'm at Owl Farm, we're getting ready for our yearly NORML drug law defense party. Last Night in Little Rock is here, TChris wasn't able to make it this year. LNILR spoke right after me about roadblocks and search and seizure. My talk was on the new crack cocaine sentencing guideline reductions.

The musicians are just arriving and the caterers are setting up.

Here's an open thread where you can pick the topics.

I won't be around to ban the trolls, so please ignore them or point them out as a site violators. I'll get to cleaning threads tomorrow and we do have a site moderator around.

Saturday Morning Open Thread

Todd Beeton has a report on Chelsea Clinton's speech to the Texas Democratic Party:

"My mother wanted me to be very clear - we are going to [be] united," Chelsea told Texas Democrats. Her mother, she noted, will be endorsing her formal rival tomorrow. Hillary Clinton will reaffirm "her life-long commitment to support and elect Democrats and Sen. Obama in November," the younger Clinton said.

Late Evening Open Thread

This is it for me tonight. I'll start live blogging the goings on in Washington regarding Hillary Clinton's speech tomorrow around 9 or 10.

BSG is getting quite freaky if you ask me. But I have to see it through.

Oh and Big Brown goes for the Triple Crown tomorrow in the Belmont. It's been 30 years now since the last Triple Crown winner.

This is an Open Thread.

Friday Evening Open Thread

Just a heads up, I will be live blogging Hillary Clinton's speech tomorrow including the Media atrocities that will proceed it. I think it is scheduled for Noon tomorrow. It surely will be televised by all the cable news networks.

Another Open Thread.

You can continue the ongoing discussions regarding sexism, McCain's disdain for the Constitution, or any other subject you choose here. I do apologize to folks looking for discussion of criminal law, but believe me, you do not want me writing about it. Jeralyn is in Aspen and TChris is tied up apparently.

Friday Morning Open Thread

Jeralyn is off to Aspen for the NORML Conference and I do not know a thing about criminal law.

Let's hope TChris comes along and gives us some of his great posts because otherwise it is just me and my yammering about politics.

You can yammer here about anything you want to talk about.

Off to Aspen for NORML Drug Law Seminar

It's that time of year again. I'm off to Aspen for the NORML Aspen Legal Seminar. My topic this year: Crackadoodledoo! A New Dawn in Crack Cocaine Sentencing. (I only wish it were true.) Here's the full schedule.

Like last year, I'll be staying in Woody Creek at Hunter Thompson's Owl Farm, with his wife Anita and his longtime Washington editor, Shelby Sadler. And of course, the peacocks.[More...]

Today's Crime Postings

I just got an e-mail asking me when TalkLeft was going to return to covering the politics of crime now that the nomination has been decided. Just today, TChris and I posted these:

Considering we are practicing lawyers with day jobs, and it's been 24 hours since the nomination has been decided, that's a fairly prodigious amount of writing. [More...]

Thursday Afternoon Open Thread

Are you feeling the Unity yet? Here's my suggestion - consider which of the remaining candidates best represents your views. Don't let the vitriol and hatred from the supporters or the blogs decide who YOU want to vote for. To me, if you are a Democrat, believe in ending the war in Iraq, in providing fairness to our tax system, in improving our health care system, in providing a fairer society, then the choice is clear - Barack Obama is clearly superior to John McCain. Thursday Open Thread

Do you have things on your mind other than what we are writing about today? Here's a place to vent them.

Earlier, Big Tent Democrat wrote "What Now?" describing what he will blog about here on out. He also posted (more) perspectives on sexism.

I'm glad to see TChris is back with his informative posts on continuing injustices.

The message if there is one: We will all survive. I plan to use Obama's promise of change to make specific requests on how to bring it about. I'm not a party activist. I'm an advocate for causes I believe in. I am going to support Barack Obama, but I'll be nudging him along every step of the way to do more. No free passes for anyone.

I'll be back tonight.
