Saturday Night Open Thread

I'm sure there's lots to talk about. Since my earlier attempt at an open thread turned into one devoted to Britain's Got Talent, here's one for all other topics.

Friday Night Open Thread: Go Nuggets!

It's LA 9, Denver 7 at the commercial break. Update: Oh-Oh, LA up by 13 at half time. Update: Lakers crush the Nuggets. Oh well, there's always next year.

I only found out there was a game 10 minutes ago while I was barbecuing, which I've always been very afraid to do alone. Sure enough, the food was done, the flames were high, the grill was smoking and I turned it off, but the flame wouldn't go out.

After 5 minutes, I finally called the TL Kid (who usually does the grilling) to ask what to do, and he was at the Nuggets game. I'm sure he loved getting my distress call. He knew just what to do (turn the knob the other way to "off" -- I had it turned to "low".) An all grill dinner: Hamburger, vidalia onion, asparagus and mushroom caps. And I didn't have to call the Fire Department. (I bet they also are watching the game and would not have been thrilled to hear from me.)

Friday Open Thread

I've never liked to stay at motels with ground level rooms and big windows that you enter from the outside.

Here's another reason not to stay at one: In Colorado Springs early this morning a deer charged through the window of a motel room, and went wild inside. The hotel guest had the foresight (and courage) to get him into the bathroom and then lock the door.

The panicked deer destroyed the toilet and flooded the room. The man says he's a maintenance worker for the hotel, so he'll have to repair the damage himself.

The deer was tranquilized and removed.

Wednesday Afternoon Open Thread

Looks like we're all busy at work today. Here's some stuff to think about:

In the be careful what you wish for department, Bernie Kerik has been indicted in Washington for lying to the White House on his 2004 application for Homeland Security Chief. Similar charges were part of his New York indictment, but he had successfully moved to dismiss them.

In December, Kerik pleaded not guilty to another indictment in New York levying similar charges against him, but those charges were dismissed because the incident allegedly happened in Washington, officials said.

Now he faces trial on two indictments in separate districts.

Memorial Day Open Thread

A little history of Memorial Day:

It was first observed in 1865 as Decoration Day by liberated slaves, who independently set up, decorated and proclaimed an ad-hoc graveyard – a field of "passionless mounds" – to honor dead Union soldiers.

Here's the original Memorial Day Order: [More...]

Saturday Open Thread

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday weekend. The TL kid and I are going apartment hunting (for him, his lease is up). He gets to go to the Nuggets game tonight, thanks to his dad who has a box every season at the Pepsi Center. The local news says they are selling standing room only tickets for tonight. Granted, I know nothing about basketball, but wouldn't you have a better view watching at home on TV or at a local bar?

What's on your agenda this weekend?

Thursday Night Open Thread

The Denver Nuggets have a big game tonight. I'll be out for a while, so here's an open thread for any discussions you might want to start.

The Kentucky jury that convicted Steven Green of the Mahmudiya rape and murders, hung today on the death penalty, which means Green will be sentenced to life without parole.

All topics welcome.

Mid-Day Open Thread

Have at it.

Update (TL): Thanks, TChris for all your posting today. I just got back from a very long and painful session at the dentist and am not quite up to blogging yet. BTD is still at his conference but I think he returns tomorrow.
