Cool Friday Evening Open Thread

The eagle flies on a Friday - or so BB King sang, but I'm feeling Kind of Blue:

But So what? It's your turn. This is an Open Thread.

Post Script - I would write something about the National Review cover of Sotomayor as . . . well I really do not know what the hell it is supposed to be representing, but it is so stupidly incoherent that I do not know what to say other than what everybody already knows - Rich Lowry is an idiot.

    cuz I am flyiiiing!

    This may be the wrong time to say this (due to other threads today) but I got a new job today!!!!!

    Some of you have heard me gripe about my current spot.  So I'm pretty excited to be moving on to a new spot.  The company seems great, they already hired some of my former fallen comrades, and I get a raise.

    So happy weekend everyone, I'm off to the bar.

    A raise? Congrats!!! (5.00 / 3) (#2)

    speech at Buchenwald was powerful in substance (placing a face on evil) and delivery.  His presentation, sans tele-prompter, was fitting and enabled him to look straight out to the world.  While words are necessary to convey the horrors, it is the silence of these camps that etches and sears the memory for all who witness them.  My first trip to Europe as a teenage backpacker was embarked upon with reluctant support by my parents, with the condition that I include a camp as part of my itinerary.  Most memories from that summer's trip have faded, except for Dachau that remains as vivid as at first entry.

    mine would prob b!tch that I'm getting ready to take her for another walk in coldish wet rain. It's been how many days of rain walks?! But I'm sure the smile in her eyes and face when she's presented with some peaches I canned as a special treat will make up for the b!tching  ;)

    The cats on the other hand . . . .  are all passed out from their turkey dinner, lol!~

    What I wouldn't give if all my pets could just talk for one day (on different days!!!). Especially since they all came from screwed up/feral/unknown backgrounds. Funny thing is, they do talk when they need to. I just wish we could sit down and clear some things up in English, especially my dogs age! {grin}

    unseasonably hot weather, broke records 2 days in a row, 90+ degrees each day.  Today, though, it's blissfully cool 65 and then back to rain tomorrow and next week.

    My girl-dog Darla doesn't go for many walks I'm afraid, since my 13 year old boy dog Cody is getting some pretty bad neuropathy and can't go.  He gets too sad when he sees us leave, so we have to sneak out, which is sometimes tough to do.

    Like yours, Darla definitely tells me what I need to know...if only I would understand.  Both my dogs are in food comas right now too.  Darla likes every food on earth except canned green beans.  Feed her a green bean and it's as if I tried to poison her.  She shakes her head and scowls...but add butter and it becomes a delicacy.  Cody is much more particular, is even getting tired of spaghetti, which has always been his favorite. He'll still get a sparkle in his eye for salmon, though.

    I think I'll give it another look and see if it still holds up.  When it was first released in the 90s, I thought it deserved Best Picture despite some sloppy sentimentality and the heavy undertones of the Greatest Generation business, then very much in vogue thanks to our good friend Tom Brokaw.

    a bit. I had just gotten basic cable in my new place and was given free HBO and it was playing. So I watched. I think the thing that fascinated me the most, was the reality of their combat. We still have it now on the ground, but we have so much more that can take us away from it.  I wonder why we (as in everyone around the world) should have ever advanced the war game play. Of course, I'm a person who didn't like history classes. Didn't like seeing the same mistakes repeated over and over.

    I appreciate TB's attention to this generation. I know how important it was to my dad. He was too young and couldn't lie his way in to follow his brothers (he was an orphan at 11 and his brothers were his rock), so he did the Korean "conflict" (and he may have lied his way into that!). I was moved today to see Charlie G highlight a college program where college students go to Normandy with those that served to retain the history.  Appreciating their service does not equal doing it again. I remember meeting my uncles as a kid, especially my dad's oldest brother. WW2 was no small deal. I actually related to him the most. It's a shame lessons weren't learned. Maybe the ones that the next generation will learn. Tomorrow, some of them will be there with those who were there.

    Hey XXXX,
    I'm sure this email is unnecessary, but just reminding you that you're site coordinating tomorrow with me and ***. See you then!

    and the second. . .

    Hello Folks,
    The farm share begins anew -- time to savor the crispness of fresh veggies, the array of summer's colors and good eatin'. We have been busy in the fields prepping the soil for seeding and transplanting. There are already so many plants in the ground -- some of you got a sneak peak at potato and leek planting. Thanks to all you who helped out!

    Also in the second email:

    Product List {for tomorrow}
    Green Garlic
    Baby Lettuce Mix
    Arugula
    Bok Choy
    Japanese sweet turnips
    Mustard Greens
    Spinach

    and I'm also getting a dozen farm fresh free range eggs. And the weekly shares will just "grow" from there!!!

    and sentence some Gitmo detainees to death. NY Times is reporting that the administration is circulating a proposal that would allow certain Gitmo detainees to plead guilty without trials and be executed. The apparent thinking is that these five, who are thought by the U.S. to be responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks, cannot be successfully prosecuted without revealing the grim details of our torture regime. And, these five have said they want to plead guilty and be executed so that they can be martyrs.

    I am not a military lawyer, or any kind of lawyer, but this sounds bad to me on so many levels.

    sounds like an understatement.

    Have they said how these five are responsible for 9/11? I'm a tad suspicious when I hear "responsible for 9/11" and "second in command/high ranking AQ" member.

    If they are saying they can't charge and take to trial someone who they think is responsible for 9/11 because of torture, does that mean they haven't sufficiently backed up the info?
