Friday Afternoon Open Thread

As regular readers know, the sports teams I live and die with, the ones where I suffer (as do the people around me) when they lose, are the Florida Gators and the New York Yankees. I love all sports, from NFL football to track to soccer to cycling, but those are the teams I am emotionally invested in.

Throughout their history, the Yankees have been TEH EVIL. The newfangled Yankee Haters think they are originals, but Yankee Hating is a longstanding tradition. There was even a Tony Award winning musical about it.

What is new is that Florida has become TEH EVIL nationally (the Ole Ball Coach (aka Evil Genius) inspired plenty of hatred in the SEC and FSU but not so much nationally.) For the time being, Florida has supplanted Notre Dame as the most hated college football team in the country. I dunno, but, like Woody Allen in Annie Hall, the Evil Queen in Snow White is starting to look appealing to me.

Wednesday Morning Open Thread

My election post mortem - um, it's the economy stupid? Don't run crazy people in New York? Old people in Maine are bigots?

I dunno, I suppose you can force a narrative out of this but I do not see one here. 2010 will be decided by what happens between now and Election Day 2010. I think there is nothing to be garnered from last night's results.

But my head is so immersed in the escapist world of sports right now that you should not go by me on this.

Tuesday Afternoon Open Thread

I'm going to share my thoughts with you on something almost none of you care about -- should Joe Girardi have started A.J. Burnett on short rest last night? I actually told my father before the game that I would have held Burnett back for Game 6 because he was better at Yankee Stadium than on the road (Burnett had a good history starting with 3 days rest.) So I am doing an "I told you so" now? No. Thinking about it, I was wrong and Girardi was right. [More...]

Monday Morning News and Open Thread

The news today so far: Ford makes a billion in profits and Hamid Karzai has been declared the elected President in Afghanistan following his opponent's withdrawal from the race.

The Guantanamo detainees will be receiving the H1N1 swine flu vaccine. Some Republicans, like John Boehner, object.

Texting while driving? If someone is killed, you could do big time...in England. Death by Dangerous Driving carries 4 to 7 years. Bet it catches on here.

Sunday Football Open Thread

Brett Favre returns to Lambeau today. The game is garnering a bit of attention. The Vikings lost a game they should have won last week. They beat the Pack in Minnesota earlier in the season. I think they are the better team. I like Favres (+3).

Philly and New York play a double header today. The Giants meet the Eagles at 1. And the Yankees play the Phillies tonight. In the football game, I like the Giants (-1). More . . .
