Saturday College Football Open Thread

The biggest game of the day will be played in Tuscaloosa where the Crimson Tide host LSU. Remarkably, LSU has won the last 4 played in Tuscaloosa. Yet Alabama is a 7.5 point favorite. I like the Tigers (+7.5).

Ohio State travels to Happy Valley to face Penn State. Terrelle Pryor, the Ohio State QB is from Pennsylvania. Ohio State still controls its destiny in the Big Ten, facing Iowa next week at the Horseshoe. The thing is . . . Ohio State just is not very good this year. I like Penn State (-5.5). More . . .

Every time I have picked Iowa this year, they have covered, most times with last minute heroics. Today Iowa is a 15 point favorite over Northwestern. Northwestern has led in this game in the 4th quarter the last 3 years, including a win last year. I'm picking Iowa (-15). More . .

Navy travels to Notre Dame. Navy has the typical precision option play the academies feature. Notre Dame has the players. I'll take Navy (+12.5).

Oregon State travels to Cal. Cal is the ranked team. Cal is the 7 point favorite. I like the Beavers (+7).

Oregon travels to Stanford today. Oregon is a 7 point favorite. It seems impossible to fathom that Oregon is only a 7 point favorite. Stanford has been good at home and Oregon should have some type of letdown from their annihilation of USC but I can not pick against Oregon. I like the Ducks (-7).

The USC Trojans travel to Arizona State today in an ornery mood. the Trojans are not great this year but Arizona State is mediocre. I like the Trojans (-10).

For the season, I am 33-21 (.611) against the spread.

This is an Open Thread.

They played Penn State very tough last week, although the score didn't reflect it.

Which is why I don't think Penn State will beat Ohio State, even though I am a Lions fan.

And Northwestern won! Woohoo! (none / 0) (#20)

Of course, I'm an NU alum and otherwise care very little about football.

I saw the beginning of the game at my health club today. Bad first quarter for NU.

when you're already living in San Diego, do you really need to go to a bowl game?

God invented bowl games so chilly Midwestern teams can finally get to experience some warmth and sunshine.

Iowa should have lost 4 times this year. Last week's cover was absurd.

    BTW, 7-0 Iowa.

All that week-long trash talk about how Oregon should be ranked ahead of Boise State - mostly by people who obviously didn't see the season-opening hammerlock the Broncos put on the Ducks (8 points, 6 First Downs, 152 Total Yards) - went dead silent about 2:00pm HST.

Stanford 51, Oregon 42. And suddenly, the run for the Rose Bowl is a five-team race.

Of those five, Oregon (7-2, 5-1) and Arizona (6-2, 4-1) are the only two that control their own destinies; if either the Ducks or the Wildcats win the rest of their games, they take both the Pac-10 title outright and the accompanying trip to Pasadena. They play each other two weeks hence in Tucson. Oregon has two home games with Arizona State next week and Oregon State on Dec. 3. Arizona has a road trip to Cal next week, and then finishes off the season at Arizona State (Nov. 28) and at USC (Dec. 5).

USC (7-2, 4-2) really needs to both win its remaining three games - all at home - with Stanford, UCLA and Arizona, and then also see Oregon lose at least two of their three remaining games, for the Trojans to even think about a return trip to Pasadena on New Year's Day. Their hopes hinge upon Arizona beating Oregon in two weeks. If the Ducks win that game, you can stick a fork in the Trojans, they're Holiday Bowl material at best.

But if Arizona beats the Ducks, USC can still tie the Wildcats for the conference title by beating them in their aforementioned season finale at the L.A. Coliseum - and the Trojans would control the head-to-head tiebreaker. However, if both teams end up in a three-way tie for the title with Oregon, other factors will come into play to figure out who goes where in the post-season.

Like USC, both Stanford (6-3, 5-2) and Oregon State (6-3, 4-2) also need to win out and hope for some outside help in order to smell the Roses. Stanford has a road trip to USC and California at home left in conference play, before ending the season by hosting Notre Dame on a non-conference match-up. Oregon State has games with Washington at home, at Washington State and at Oregon.

Can Iowa's medic tackle OSU on the road? (none / 0) (#24)

If so, how would the medic fare in a Rose Bowl re-match of September's romp by the football team over Arizona in Iowa City?  It was not as close as the 27-17 score indicated.
