Five States Have Recreational Marijuana on the Ballot

Voters in Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Maine, and Nevada will vote on legalizing marijuana for recreational use today.

The people behind the ballot initiatives in these five states are all using the same sales pitch to sell their cause: Legalizing weed will be a boon to the state treasury. Maine: “Tax dollars for schools & police”; Massachusetts: “Tax and regulate”; Nevada: “Jobs, jobs, jobs.”

Money seems to be a big factor:

On Oct. 28, the Marijuana Policy Group published a comprehensive report crediting legal weed with having created 18,005 full-time jobs and adding about $2.4 billion to the state’s economy in 2015. Excise and sales taxes alone brought in $121.5 million; much of the remaining increase in revenue was driven, essentially, by weed tourism.

Election Mid-Day Thread

Royal Jordanian Airlines is showing this ad today:

Via The Australian, Donald Trump was asked about the possibility of him losing the election:

"If I don't win, I will consider it a tremendous waste of time, energy and money."

Trump was booed in his own neighborhood as he and Melania went to vote. Then, inside the voting room, he's watching her like a hawk. Does he suspect she's voting for Hillary?

Trump Supporter's Racist Rant Goes Viral

This racist rant by a Trump supporter in Memphis at a young black man who cut him off in traffic is just astonishing. It's also going viral. It had 2 million views in 12 hours. FB took it down but other copies are out there.

Update: Trevor Noah of the Daily Show picks up on and spreads the video on Twitter.

The man has been identified and his address published on Twitter. The local news station posted a photo of his house, without the address or neighborhood. His license plate was viewable in the video, not too hard to do.

The Justice Department will be monitoring votes in 28 states. One of the places to be monitored: Shelby County (Memphis) TN (no link for CBS due to autoplay video.)

Comey Eats His Letter to Congress, Writes Another One

This would be comical if it weren't so reprehensible. After barging into the national election like a steamroller, James Comey now goes all Emily Litela and says, "Never Mind." Here's his letter to Congress clearing saying once again, no reasonable prosecutor would file a case against Hillary Clinton.

As to Hillary, Weiner's computer yielded a big fat zero.

Trump Won't Win, But You Still Need to Vote

The New York Times: Hillary's electoral college numbers show a solid lead. Trump has almost no path to win.

Latino early voting has surged, especially in Nevada and Florida. Hillary is who they are voting for.

If Trump loses Nevada, his chances drop to miniscule. If he loses Florida and Nevada, it's over. He's toast.

Turn off the TV, get outside, play with your kids, read a book. We're almost done. Don't get punked by Trump's lies. He's just desperate. [More...]

Bridgegate Convictions and Chris Christie

Chris Christie's former ally and aide were convicted in Bridgegate.

William E. Baroni Jr., the former deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Bridget Kelly, Christie’s former deputy chief of staff for legislative and intergovernmental affairs, were both convicted of all the counts against them, the U.S. attorney’s office in New Jersey said.

During the trial, the defense for Kelly and Baroni tried to pitch them as Christie’s scapegoats. Prosecutors described them as the governor’s “loyal lieutenants” intent on helping their boss run for president.

Bridget Kelly testified Christie knew about it.

Obama Commutes Another 92 Sentences

Thank you President Obama. Another 72 inmates received commutations of their sentences today, bringing his 8 day total to 172 and !

President Obama on Friday commuted the sentences of 72 inmates, the latest sign he is accelerating his clemency push during his final months in office.

It was the second time in the past eight days the White House announced that a large group of people, most convicted of nonviolent drug offenses, would be released from federal prison. The two batches totaled 170 inmates.

In total, 944 people have had their sentences cut short by Obama — more than the last 11 presidents combined — with 760 receiving commutations this year alone.

Please keep them coming!

Friday Night Open Thread

I am just getting back from long jail day and have not seen or listened to any news. Traffic was just abysmal everywhere.

This weekend it will be worse. Streets around me will closed Sunday while they move a museum to the neighborhood. They are even expecting crowds:

Public viewing areas will be located along the route on Broadway, 11th Avenue, 13th Avenue and Bannock Street.

I'm also following my own advice and not reading any more so called news about the election or email investigations.

On comments: If I find any name-calling or insults among commenters, those commenters are going into time out until after the election. Either be polite to each other, don't respond to each other, or get lost. I'm not going to wade through threads of insults.

Remember to vote. This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

Bernie, Hillary and Pharell Williams in N.C.

Bernie Sanders campaigned with Hillary today. So did Pharrell Williams.

Sanders also made the case for a Clinton presidency, saying she would raise the minimum wage, reverse the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, advocate for equal pay for women and paid family leave and take steps to address global warming. He warned Trump would throw 20 million people off health insurance by repealing Obamacare and said Trump's campaign has been built around “bigotry.”

Pharrell Williams talked a lot about women. But I was more interested in this:

During his remarks, Williams said Clinton has made a “personal commitment” to him to fix certain “wrongs,” including a 1994 crime bill that’s led to the mass incarceration of African American males. “This country hasn’t always been fair to all people,” he said. “But I think Hillary’s gonna help fix these wrongs,” said Williams.

I have no Trump news to report. Mrs T used a line in her anti-bullying speech today that has only been used by one other person -- Marla Maples in 2011. "I believed if you could dream it you could become it." The concept is hardly original to either of them, but the only people to use those exact words are M & M. (Yes, it's hard to believe anyone would find either of them readable, let alone quotable.)
