Aspen Bound and Another Open Thread

It's time for the Annual NORML legal conference in Aspen. As always, I'll be staying with Anita at Owl Farm in Woody Creek, just outside of Aspen -- and with the peacocks. (And, she tells me 29 other animals.)

I'll leave you with a note that Hunter had on his fridge. I have no idea what he meant, but it seems particularly topical. [More...]

Have a great weekend, I'll be checking in from time to time, but not before late tonight.

This is another open thread, all topics welcome.

That Hunter is a slightly creepy looking guy, but it looks like he is in the pic twice - in the background with a striped shirt to go with his plaid shirt. Must have a great and dry sense of humor.

I'm making a dinner for friends tonite. Lamb stew with dried figs and lemon, with fresh ginger, saffron, garlic and sweet onion. I slow cook it all afternoon and serve with a creamy polenta, and a salad that includes grilled asparagus and a fresh tarragon dressing. Dessert is a checkerboard cake - dense semisweet chocolate cake checkerboarded with "hog-it-down" vanilla ice cream with a bit of whipped cream with homemade kahlua (a gift). Love to cook and only do it occasionally, altho I usually try to treat my sister and her family for Sunday night dinners.

... although I don't necessarily envy your weekend amongst the peacocks.

Before we moved to our present place in 1996, we lived a year on the slopes of Koko Crater in the Hawaii Kai area of east Honolulu, and we had feral peafowl living in the trees and brush above us.

All I can say is that I find them to be terribly noisy (and dirty) birds to have around, and they possess a shrill banshee-like cry that sounds like someone yelling "Help! Help! Help!" And I swear, whenever they landed on our roof, especially in the middle of the night -- well, it sounded like someone dropped a bowling ball on our house.

Okay, that's enough about peafowl. My younger daughter is graduating with honors from high school tonight at 6:30 p.m., and my mother and aunt arrived from Pasadena, CA and the spouse's parents from Corpus Christi, TX this week for the occasion.

After the ceremony, she and most of her class are going out on the Honolulu Star for a celebratory cruise off Waikiki (non-alcoholic, of course), while her parental and grandparental units will have to console ourselves with dinner and cocktails at Roy's Bistro.

Anyway, I wish you a wonderful and successful conference. Aspen in June sounds like heaven, especially in the company of good friends -- even with the peacocks.

    Aloha.

It's a big day for her, and we're all very proud of her accomplishments. She's very excited and and at the same time quite nervous, as to be expected. It's one of life's milestones, marking a transition from childhood. I'll never forget the day of my high school granduation, but that's because I was in a pretty bad traffic accident earlier that morning.

I had driven my mother's Ford LTD to the store and was returning home, when I got hit by a guy -- the Lutheran minister from the church up the street, no less -- who had been distracted and inadvertantly ran the red light at E. Mountain Street and N. Allen Ave. in Pasadena, which was less than one block from our house. He struck me broadside on the passenger side, so hard that he flipped and rolled me twice. Surprisingly, the other driver was fine, and in fact I later learned that he was the one who pulled me from the wreck.

Even though the accident obviously wasn't my fault, I do remember apologizing to my mother profusely at the scene for totalling her car; she had heard the crash from inside our house and ran outside. I was checked out at the hospital emergency room and released, and thus got to attend my graduation that night, albeit with a concussion and headache. It gave everyone a good story to talk about later.

Let's just say that it was an auspicious debut to my adulthood, and altogether consistent with my penchant back then for somehow always finding my way into drama.

    Aloha.

    From CNN:

Florida judge revoked bond Friday for George Zimmerman, who is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin.

Seminole County Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. ordered Zimmerman to surrender within 48 hours.

Lester accused Zimmerman of having misrepresented how much money he had when his bond was originally set in April.

The decision came after prosecutors asked Lester to revoke the bond.

Prosecutors argued that Zimmerman "misrepresented, misled and deceived the court" during the April bond hearing not only about his family's financial circumstances but about whether he had a U.S. passport.

Lester appeared to accept the explanation from Zimmerman's lawyer that his client had given him a second passport that he had obtained, but that the lawyer simply forgot to hand it over to authorities until Friday.

Interesting bit of news about the passport(s).

"SANFORD, Fla. (AP) -- A judge on Friday revoked the bond of the neighborhood watch volunteer charged with killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and ordered him returned to jail within 48 hours.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester said that George Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, misled the court about how much money they had available when his bond was set for $150,000 in April. Prosecutors claim Zimmerman had $135,000 available that had been raised by a website he set up.

Zimmerman's wife testified at the bond hearing that they had limited funds available since she was a nursing student and Zimmerman wasn't working.

"He can't sit back and obtain the benefit of a lower bond based upon those material falsehoods," Lester said.

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said the fact that Zimmerman and his wife never used the money for anything indicated "there was no deceit."

Prosecutor Bernie De la Rionda described the Zimmermans' testimony as "misleading."

"This court was led to believe they didn't have a single penny," said De la Rionda. "It was misleading and I don't know what words to use other than it was a blatant lie."
