Sunday Morning Open Thread

Fabian Cancellara, the greatest cycling road racer in the world, blitzed the field again, winning Paris-Roubaix with ease, just as he did in the Ronde. Next big one - Liege-Bastogne-Liege. The first big GT is the Giro d'Italia next month. The Tour de France is in July.

An exciting Masters finish is shaping up this afternoon. Westwood leads Mickleson by 1 and Tiger lurks at 4 back. Worth watching.

Moving Day Open Thread

No, I'm not moving. I am referring to Saturday at Augusta, long known as Moving Day.

Right now, two Brits, Poulter and Westwood (-8) are 2 shots clear of Woods, Mickleson and Kim (-6), among others. Among the senior contingent, Watson and Couples are at (-3). Who below these players might emerge? youneverknow. That's why they call it Moving Day.

Sunday is the 108th Paris-Roubaix cycling classic. Cancellara blitzed Boonen at the Ronde. Can he do it again? I say no. Boonen for the win.

Friday Night Open Thread

Aspen will lose its long-time, much beloved Sheriff, Bob Braudis, at the end of this year. Braudis, who fell ill in Europe earlier this year and was hospitalized for quite a while, announced today he will retire and not run for re-election. His failed challenger in the last election, who couldn't be more different than Braudis, says he'll run again. I hope another candidate steps up.

The New York Times has an article on the political test facing Obama in replacing Justice Stevens. Who's heading up the replacement team? Not such good news -- Here's Rahm again:

The White House already has a Supreme Court nomination team in place, with the selection process run by the new White House counsel, Robert F. Bauer, and overseen by Rahm Emanuel, the chief of staff. Once a nominee is picked, Mr. Bauer’s wife, Anita Dunn, who is Mr. Obama’s former communications director, will coordinate with advocacy groups. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., who was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee during some of its most contentious confirmation fights, is also likely to play a crucial role.

Friday Morning Open Thread

The only matter I have any familiarity with from last week is the Masters and Tiger Woods' much ballyhooed return. Tiger proved yet again he is the greatest golfer who ever lived. First tournament back and he is hitting it great and putting it great. His short game is not all there yet but boy, with the pressure he was under - what a performance.

I never rooted for Tiger. Always a contrarian, I can't be for the individual or team everybody else roots for. (Everybody hates the Yankees and the Gators so don't try to compare them to Tiger.) But I am sort of rooting for Tiger here (though Lefty is still the guy I am rooting for to win it.) Tiger the person? I do not know him. What his wife thinks about him is between him and his wife. Tiger the golfer? He was pretty remarkable yesterday. Of course so was Tom Watson, Fred Couples and Lefty is right there too. It should be a great weekend of golf.

Thursday Night Open Thread

Big Tent Democrat is en route home and will be back posting tomorrow.

TV seems like re-runs tonight, so after Survivor, I'm going start watching Season 2 of Breaking Bad which arrived from Netflix.

Keith Olbermann just joined Twitter. He already has 5,200 folllowers. Will he have anything interesting to say? Doesn't seem like his medium, but who knows. If there's something going on you'd like to discuss, here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

Wednesday Night Open Thread

Who's going home on American Idol? Bigger question: Is anyone watching? Dancing With the Stars had bigger ratings last night. Since I'm still watching, I'll say I really don't care who goes tonight, since I doubt it will be my favorites Crystal or Casey -- or Lee or Katie Stevens. Most likely: Aaron Kelly or Andrew Garcia. Who should go? Tim Urban. (No spoilers please.)

A new Top Chef Masters is on Bravo. I've never seen it, is it like Next Iron Chef or something unique?

It's a busy work day here, and a quick scan didn't reveal any news to share. What am I missing? BTD is still busy in hearings. Here's an open thread, all topics welcome. I'll be back later this afternoon.

Tuesday Night Open Thread

It's Lennon/McCartney night on American Idol, which is just starting here. Katie Stevens was great, singing "Let it Be." Andrew Garcia was peppier than usual, but I felt like I was at a high school dance listening to a local band. Who did you like?

Who's going home on DWTS? I hope it's Kate Gosselin or Buzz Aldrin. There's also a new Good Wife and Justified (on FX.)

There were 8 bombings in Baghdad today. And a new filing by Roman Polanski, seeking a special counsel to investigate the allegations of official misconduct.

Thank goodness Rudy Giuliani has the stature of a footnote now, so remarks like these don't carry any weight. Maybe Ms. Judy still listens to him, but I doubt anyone else does.

What's on your mind tonight? This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

I've already written up what interests me this morning and am now leaving for work. BTD is off doing hearings this week.

If there's political or other news you want to discuss, here's the place -- an open thread, all topics welcome.

Monday Night TV and Open Thread

Monday has turned out to be the best night of the week for TV. There's Dancing With the Stars, a 2 hour "24", Nurse Jackie, Life Unexpected and Damages. The only way to watch this much TV is with Tivo to fast forward through the commercials.

The AP has a wrapup of the three leading contenders to replace Justice John Paul Stevens if he announces his retirement.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is in the news again. Now he's started a "Pedalvision" program for inmates. If they want to watch TV, they have to do it by riding a stationary bike to generate electricity.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

Monday Morning Open Thread

BTD has hearings this week, and is taking the week to prepare for them.

I'm not seeing much in the news this morning: Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's doctor, heads back to court where the DA is asking the judge to strip him of his medical license as a condition of bail. They tried it before with an earlier judge and lost. I think Dr. Murray's lawyers are correct, unless the state can show changed circumstances, the bail conditions should not be changed.

The latest tawdry celebrity couple news in the air pertains to Bruce Springsteen. Remember the woman whose husband claimed she had an affair with The Boss when the two got friendly at a New Jersey gym? He's filed court documents claiming she did have an affair with Bruce, She's now filed papers saying her husband made it up, thinking Bruce would pay to keep it quiet. She's also alleging he's a physical abuser who had numerous dalliances during their marriage. Someone ought to deliver a washing machine to the front door of all these couples (Jesse James, Tiger Woods, etc.) so that instead of foisting these personal, embarrassing details on us, they could be reminded to take care of their dirty laundry themselves.

One person in trouble who was impressive last night was Rod Blagojevich, who got "fired" last night on Celebrity Apprentice. [More...]

Sunday Night Open Thread

Hopefully, everyone is unwinding from a pleasant holiday weekend. I'm going to watch Pacific, Celebrity Apprentice and Justified, and call it a night.

If you did get an iPad, please give us your updated thoughts, particularly on good Apps, now that you've had a day to try it out. Gizmodo has a round-up here -- and a handy set-up guide -- and a list of what they call the "essential apps."
