    running under an interview with faux economist "Club for Growth" founder Stephen Moore.

    "Are Americans giving up citizenship because of high taxes?"

    Think about that for a minute.  Where in the developed world could you possibly pay lower taxes than in the U.S.?

    Flat-out insane.  And half the time, he doesn't know jack about what he's talking about.  I happened to see him earnestly explaining to Greta Van Susteren on Fox a while back that the health care bill was going to take a huge chunk out of Medicare Advantage (true), and when she wasn't sure which part of Medicare that was....

    he explained in tones of aggrieved outrage that it was -- wait for it -- the part that pays for prescription drugs.

    He says complete and utter garbage like that all the time, and yet gets invited back on both Fox and CNN constantly and listened to respectfully.

    He's really a piece of work-- Arthur "Supply-Side Economics" Laffer's favorite co-author.

    The U.S. is apparently unique in its expectation that you report your worldwide income to the IRS.

    I believe Terry Gilliam did it, for example.  But it's pretty rare, and for him it was probably as much about ideology as money.

    I listened to the segment and they never got around to explaining that part.

    OTOH, the U.S. tax rate on wealthy people is so minimal now, it's really pretty ridiculous.  Made some kind of sense back in the day when the top marginal rate was 90 percent.

    I'd actually be perfectly happy to swap the foreign-earned taxes for, oh, say, a nice middle-of-the-road 75 percent top marginal rate.

    But if keeping your excess billions is so important to you that you'll renounce your citizenship, I say good riddance.

    Turns out a whopping 508 people preferred the full measure of their lucre to citizenship.  Feh.

    we worked overseas for many years and we only paid taxes on the first $85,000 earned. Rules were tight, though....couldn't be in the US for more than 10 days a year, as an example.

    This has always struck me as gratuitous harassment rather than protected speech.

    Now, more than four years after his son died in a Humvee accident in Iraq, Snyder's legal battle is headed to the Supreme Court. And his tireless efforts have drawn support from across the country, including a wave of donations after he was ordered to pay the church's court costs -- a $16,500 judgment that the congregation plans to use for more protests. Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, 20, was not gay. But for the Westboro church, any dead soldier is fair game. ...

    Snyder won the first round decisively, when a jury in federal court in Baltimore awarded him $10.9 million in damages in October 2007. A judge later reduced the award to $5 million.

    Last September, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the verdict, ruling Westboro's protest was constitutionally protected speech.

    The Supreme Court agreed last month to consider whether the protesters' actions, no matter how provocative and upsetting, are protected by the First Amendment. The case will be argued in the fall.

    to bury a soldier, I decided long ago to ask for help from the Patriot Guard Riders.  When Westboro began their deal, retired soldiers initially spoke about beating them up....not a good choice though, just a knee jerk hurt angry response.  It didn't take long for the Patriot Guard Riders to get their act together and provide a buffer if you will between Westboro and soldier loved ones.  They do our soldiers and their families the best of services, and Westboro can continue to "protest" however it is that they choose to exercise that American right.  I may have had a problem ignoring them during a service without a professional, dedicated, competent buffer.....but with such a thing they would not even be a factor for me during a time of grief.  I wish other grieving families didn't take their crap so hard......it isn't anything more significant than irrelevant solid crap.

    to street justice to deal with the Phelps mafia...not the halls of justice.  protected speech is too important to f*ck with and possibly set a bad precedent.

    When they show up at a funeral, start knocking some teeth out...sometimes its the only way, the only language some mooks understand.  Even if the police lock ya up for assault, no jury would ever convict you in a million years.

    That's exactly what they want.  That way they can file a civil suit and get more money to fund their traveling caravan of hate.  

    Better to outnumber them and drown out their message.

    apparently the "tea party express" is coming to Boston today with Palin and co.  Beautiful day today, but I guess I will not be going anywhere near the park.

    now before anyone calls me a procrastinator... It's almost a month early!

    People living in "disaster areas" from the flooding have until May 11th to file.  This was defined as Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk and Worcester counties in MA - which includes the city of Boston, and pretty much the entire south-eastern part of the state.  Any resident living in those counties (and I assume some others in other states) or who has a business there has until May.

    Link for anyone wondering if they qualify.
