Say hello to a new death penalty blog that launched today -- Executed Today:

Executed Today is a blog of history, sociology, biography, criminology, law, and kismet —- an unrepresentative but arresting view of the human condition across time and circumstance from the parlous vantage of the scaffold. This blog each day chronicles an historical execution that took place on that date, and the story behind it.

While the author is personally opposed to the death penalty, he says the blog is neither pro or anti-death penalty:

This blog is neither pro- nor anti-death penalty in general nor in any particular. Its interest is the perspective on humanity we gain through the window of this human institution.

But the subject invites ideology and fairness here demands the biases of the author. I am, personally, a death penalty opponent.

Comments are invited, and the author obviously has a sense of humor. Not only is he launching on Halloween, but the tag line above the comment box says:

Approach the Headsman

Something I got wrong? Right? Have a date you want to make sure is on my radar? Consider the whole concept of this blog appalling?

Definitely worth checking out.

For the link, and (Molly) for the manual lookup. I hope it was vaguely worthwhile ... and although a medieval werewolf persecution might be a bit off the beaten track, the death penalty and politics are such close cousins at any time -- witness yesterday -- that I have a feeling our paths will cross from time to time.

who tried to research the history of every DP case in the US (I think including colonial times). I don't think he was part of the faculty.
Do you know who he was and what happened to his research?

Though I also answered this on Executed Today, the research is so amazing I wanted to make sure it was also on hand for anyone looking at this thread here:
That would be the Espy file. Quite an undertaking.
The data is online at the Death Penalty Information Center. They also have a somewhat more robust database of all modern (post-1976) executions.
