Hillary Joins Dodd Filibuster Of FISA Telecom Amnesty

Good for Hillary:

Q: Can you discuss your position on the reauthorization of the FISA bill?
HRC: I am troubled by the concerns that have been raised by the recent legislation reported out of the Intelligence Committee. I haven't seen it so I can't express an opinion about it. But I don't trust the Bush Administration with our civil rights and liberties. So I'm going to study it very hard. As matters stand now, I could not support it and I would support a filibuster absent additional information coming forward that would convince me differently.

Move On should shift its e-mail campaign to the Senate Judicary Committee.

Chris Dodd helped a bit too though.

"As it stands now"?  As if her team hasn't studied this in detail already?  If the next poll blows the other way, or if Obama shifts his stand, she will cite "new information" and stop supporting the filibuster.

    Think we've started something here? (none / 0) (#5)

    Could it be?

That our elected representatives will actually start standing up for the constitutional rights of those they represent?

"Is that you John Wayne?  Is this me?"

Keep this up and we just might see the rise of democracy in America.

What a radical, decadently subversive idea.

I'm getting all excited just thinking about it.

Clinton and Obama supporting the filibuster doesn't change the Senate vote count.

There are still enough votes just from the Senators who voted for the FISA Amendment in August to overcome any filibuster.

Some of those, or some who abstained, at least eight altogether, need to be "persuaded" to vote against cloture when Reid tries to proceed with it.

Repugs Lamar Alexander, Jim Bunning, Byron Dorgan, Judd Gregg, Tim Johnson, Trent Lott and John McCain all abstained in August but would be expected to support the new bill in it's current form, including the telecom amnesty.

That's potentially eight votes for cloture[from the bad guys] --presumably the Netroots will have to swing at least that many Democrats to oppose the extension.

You Give Her Too Much Credit (none / 0) (#7)

Maybe she will do the right thing, but there is enough wiggle room in that statement for a hula dancer.  It's utter mush.  I am with Glenn Greenwald on this one-- just say whether you will help stop any bill that would grant immunity to telecoms, or not.  Haven't read it yet???  Please.

She voted aginst the FISA Amendment in August. (none / 0) (#8)

She's on the right side on this. That $119,250 of telecom money is a drop in the bucket of her fundraising this year. Not a big deal if she loses that support.

Though Clinton and Obama supporting the filibuster doesn't change the Senate vote count, it helps put pressure on Reid, and on other Democrats.

It means that progressive pressure is starting to have some effect.

I don't often take part in MoveOn's campaigns these days (I'm tired of their constant refusal to address the attacks on our reproductive rights), but on this effort I applaud them.

AND Hillary, for stating without question that she will do the right thing re FISA.

    Yeah!
