Chris Dodd has some balls, the rest of Congress... (5.00 / 1) (#1)

    ...not so much.

Gotta love Chris Dodd on this one, hopefully someone will offer his him the vice presidency, but how did retroactive immunity creep into this bill in the first place, why are the Democrats in Congress still catering to the every whim of the Bush administration?  Where are the other Democrats on this, where are the rest of the people's elected representatives, to stand with Chris against these telecom giants who have been violating our privacy for years, suppressing free WiFi, and keeping the cost of cable and satellite TV so high that most Americans can't afford it, thereby preventing most of the US population from having access to information which is vital to maintenance of a healthy democracy.

Where is Hillary Clinton, where is Barack Obama?  I suppose they're too busy taking money from these monopolies to speak up.  Especially Hillary, apparently she'll take money from anyone these days.  But of course it won't affect her once she gets in the White House, right?

in Straw Poll, surging to second place behind Edwards, 14 percentage points higher than last month.

This is where not being an office-holder hurts Edwards, because he can only say what he would do if in the Senate (I believe him, though) versus who's actually doing something.

Given the Congressional approval ratings, continuing to be the stand up guy in Congress may really catapult Dodd beyond approval of just us blog readers.

    Night Owl at Docudharma:
    KagroX has the explanation here:
So here's how a hold works: If you want to hold a bill, you tell your party leader that if anyone asks for unanimous consent to bring that bill to the floor, you intend to object and withhold your consent. That would force whoever wants to bring the bill up to use the actual rules -- typically making a "motion to proceed" -- which is a bit of a pain in the ass, and requires getting an actual vote on whether or not to start debate on this bill.

If you're really insistent , you'll show up and filibuster the motion to proceed [which Dodd has said he will do]. Then we're back in the familiar and annoying territory of needing 60 votes to do anything. And that's always dicey, especially in an atmosphere in which Senators will automatically get each others' backs even if they're doing something stupid, like filibustering a motion to proceed on a perfectly good and popular bill. You get another Senator's back on something stupid, because one day you'll need him to get yours on something equally stupid.

Technically, Dodd would not be filibustering the actual bill, but the motion to proceed which sends the bill to the floor for a vote. Like with any other filibuster, sixty votes is needed to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed.

And when the Senate passed the FISA Amendement in August the vote was 60-28.  With 12 abstaining.

So would take only ONE of the yea's from August to vote against cloture on the motion. More depending on whether any of those who abstained in August vote to break Dodd's filibuster.

Killing this bill completely is very  doable, if any of the following Democratic Senators who voted FOR the FISA Amendment in August have enough of their constituents descend on them in enough of a rage:

    Bayh ( D-IN), Yea
    Carper ( D-DE), Yea
    Casey ( D-PA), Yea
    Conrad ( D-ND), Yea
    Feinstein ( D-CA), Yea
    Inouye ( D-HI), Yea
    Klobuchar ( D-MN), Yea
    Landrieu ( D-LA), Yea
    Lieberman (I D-CT), Yea
    Lincoln ( D-AR), Yea
    Mikulski ( D-MD), Yea
    Nelson ( D-FL), Yea
    Pryor ( D-AR), Yea
    Salazar ( D-CO), Yea
    Webb ( D-VA), Yea

    And 3 who abstained:

    Dorgan ( D-ND), Not Voting
    Johnson ( D-SD), Not Voting
    Kerry ( D-MA), Not Voting

If he can't do it... Hillary can, I suppose.  :-(

I'm glad to see my man coming down on the side of the people, for he is the People's candidate.

Clinton/Obama, can you say winning ticket?

Clinton/Obama, can you say landslide victory?

Clinton/Obama, can you say a new day dawning in American?

    I knew you could.  :-)

Dodd Raises Interesting Point (none / 0) (#6)

I was impressed by what Dodd had to say in the video.  I wish there were more like him in Congress.  I also hope to be able to vote for him in the Florida primary.

In the video Dodd raised an interesting point.  Bush as President can grant the telecoms immunity if he wants to.  So, why is he asking Congress to do this?
