The column is actually former federal prosecutor Elizabeth De La Vega, rather than ABC news correspondent (I think its ABC... is it NBC?) Elizabeth Vargas. I hope she's right about Mr. Fitzgerald's integrity. It seems that if Mr. Fitzgerald has any integrity at all, Mr. Rove will be due for a date in the dock any day now. Not that there's any hurry...

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton had said he had hoped to start the trial in early September. That would have placed the monthlong trial right before the November elections in which corruption and the Iraq war will be key issues. LIBBY LAWYER BUSY IN SEPTEMBER Walton, a Bush appointee, said Libby's main lawyer would be tied up with a 10-week trial around September and instead set the date for early January.
And conviently scheduled two months after midterm elections. Hat tip to josh marshall for pointing this out.

Libby is, of course, not paying one cent for his defense.
But the managers of the fund-raising effort on behalf of Mr. Libby say they have already reached the $2 million mark and expect to increase the pace when they start a fund-raising Web site. "It's a particularly excellent start," said Mel Sembler, the chairman of the Scooter Libby Legal Defense Trust.

Squeaky, It pays to be a friend in a high place now doesn't it. I think our former president didn't have to pay for his lawyers either, not put too fine of a point on it. Political prosecutions have a tendency to bring out the partisans on both sides as our recent past has proven so well.

Actually Telly, didn't Tom DeLay want to get his trial overwith before the House Majority leader voting took place (like he was ever going to get his way and reclaim his former position)? That's what I remember from a couple of months ago now - he wanted the judge changed AND his trial to start and end as quickly as possible (so he could try to reclaim his title as the king of corruption in Congress). DeLay was (and still is) in such denial of any wrongdoing that he probably thought he would actually be CLEARED of all charges in time to run for Majority Leader again. What a loser.

Jimcee-Clinton raised $5mil and wound up owing $5mil out if his pocket. He was entitled to to be reimbursed but the gov but he never persued it. He felt the taxpayers had already spent enough on his purjury charge. link I agree with your conclusion though. The two cases are quite disimilar in character. One charge of purjury was a result of love in its simplest form and no one was harmed (Lewinsky, Hilary and Bill might argue that point). The other arose out of vindictive hate and is tremendously complex. It is closely related to the acts leading up to war which included making false claims, cooking evidence. Many have died as a result.

et al - Anyone else catch this?
Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald dropped a mini-bombshell Friday afternoon while he was explaining his indictment of Lewis "Scooter" Libby to the press. It turns out that the central premise of his investigation - that Valerie Plame Wilson enjoyed protected "covert" status at the CIA may not be true. "Let me say two things," Fitzgerald told reporters. "I am not speaking [in this indictment] to whether or not Valerie Wilson was covert . . . And we have not made any allegation that Mr. Libby knowingly or intentionally outed a covert agent." Fitzgerald did insist that Mrs. Wilson's "association with the CIA was classified," which would make leaking her occupation a crime. But he declined to bring any charges to that effect, casting even more doubt on the claim that her CIA job was a closely guarded secret.
Anyone want to compare Libby's alledged actions to the outing of a very important international terrorist spying program? The latter's SP should have a field day. Squeaky writes:

Uh, I think you spell that lust. chucko - Shall we wait for the trial of Delay or should we just take him to jail?

If you care to bother reading their decision, someone did make the comparison you seek. The appeal by Judith Miller to not reveal her sources was decided by Circuit Judges SENTELLE, HENDERSON and TATEL, Here is the entire decision in PDF form. Knock yourself out. pdf

jimcee- Jane at fdl has an interesting piece about who is contributing to Libby's defense fund. Just to provide some context regarding Clinton's defense fund, Robert De Niro contributed $5,000. and that was a relatively large donation. She Quotes from emptywheel:
The fund is managed by a lifetime Republican operative, Barbara Comstock and chaired by Mel Sembler, Ambassador to Italy when the whole Niger caper was planned. In addition, the fund includes such notable contributors as Jeanne Kirkpatrick, Bernard Lewis, and James Woolsey. These folks are not just trying to bail out (literally) a good friend. They're trying to prevent their entire Neocon project from being severely damaged by the trial.
