As TalkLeft discussed here, Ken Starr is trying to persuade Gov. Schwarzenegger to spare the life of Michael Morales. The judge who sentenced Morales to death now thinks he shouldl live. Today, the Mercury News weighs in:

Innocence is not at issue in Morales' case. He committed a terrible crime. But the state appears to have wrongfully condemned him to death, under false pretenses. If so, killing him would be an injustice.

    Another "turd in the punchbowl" clemency proposal. Clemency does not fit the Governator's public image. This one will be denied too.

    According to court records, Morales' cousin, Ricky Ortega, orchestrated Winchell's murder because he was jealous of her involvement with his male lover. He recruited Morales, who was drunk and high on PCP at the time, to help him "and Morales agreed out of family loyalty," the documents stated.
    Morales was sober enough to understand "family loyalty", to agree to murder, to get a claw hammer, to wait for the girl, to get an erection, to murder her, etc but please spare his life because he really really did not boast about murdering the teenager.

    What is it that causes the simpleminded logic and learning impaired to be unable to recognize that there are two issues here? (1) The basic core issue, that of the death penalty itself. And (2) the issue raised by TChris: that Morales has been worongfully given the death sentence based on false testimony from a jailhouse informant, and that even the judge who sentenced him to death is petitioning the 'governator' to grant clemency?

    JRT & ding777, No one, here or anywhere else, is suggesting that he does not deserve punishment for his crime. Personally I think that for raping a 17 year old he couldn't be locked up long enough. Got that? Good. That wasn't too difficult for you I hope... You're spouting the usual and the most simpleminded wingnut knee jerk reaction to TChris' post - simple transparent diversion. What's your problem, you're in withdrawal? Not enough lynchings in your neighborhood lately? Tough, don't come crying for sympathy for your frustrated bloodlust. For once turn your brains on before you put your fingers in gear, ok? Jeezus...
