Wednesday Morning Open Thread

I have been reading with some amusement the back and forth between Glenn Greenwald and Jane Hamsher and their readers on L'Affaire Olbermann (did Immelt make a deal with Murdoch to silence Olbermann's attacks on BillO in exchange for BillO not covering GE?)

My disdain for Olbermann is a matter of record, and the journalistic value of Olbermann's attacks of BillO (or BillO's "reporting" on GE for that matter) seems dubious to me. But the principle matters. Glenn and Jane are right about that. The idea of the corporate interest of a journalistic enterprise driving editorial content is anathema to principled journalism. But when it comes to Olbermann and BillO, I can't get too worked up. Neither are really journalists (though Olbermann has less of a need to depart from reality, for as Rob Cordrry famously remarked, "the facts have a liberal bias.")

Speaking of non-journalists, Arianna has her Clinton Hate on again.

Late Night Open Thread

I think some of the song lyrics on Spinner's recent compilation of The 20 Worst Lyrics Ever aren't so bad. The reader's choices are better, although I would have elevated their number 10 to number 1:

"Having my baby
What a lovely way of saying
That you're thinking of me"

Or maybe she's saying, "You did this to me you SOB." (By the way, Mr. Anka, "having our baby" would have been a bit less self-centered.)

Late Night Open Thread

I continue to be surprised at how much people have to say about the Gates/Crowley/Obama story. But the threads keep filling up.

In other news: A team of U.S. investigators report that marijuana use, even long-term, is associated with a “significantly reduced risk” of head and neck cancers. The Cash for Clunkers program is broke. More details on the search warrants for Michael Jackson's doctor.

Here's a late night thread for these and any other topics you wish to discuss.

Thursday Afternoon Open Thread

We've got lots of posts up today but it seems everyone still wants to talk about Gates. There's many more important things going on in my opinion, but here's an open thread if you want to keep discussing it -- or anything else we haven't covered today.

There's new details on Karl Rove and investigation into the firing of U.S. Attorneys.

I'm going to be interviewing Manhattan District Attorney candidate Richard Aborn on Monday. Here is his stand on issues. If you have suggestions for questions I should ask him, let me know in comments. I like that his stance against our current drug policies include rehabilitation for both first and second time offenders: [more...]

Tuesday Morning Open Thread

Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination for the Supreme Court will be approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee today. Only 1 Republican, Lindsay Graham, will vote in favor of confirmation. Republican senators Lugar, Snowe, Collins and Martinez have also announced their support for Sotomayor. I hope and predict there will be no other Republican votes for her. For two reasons - first, because it will firm up the new view that I have championed that the President is not due deference in his judicial appointments; and second, Latino support for Republicans will grow even smaller.
