Friday Night Open Thread

So glad the weekend is here.

Here are some law professors supporting Prop 19 and legalization of marijuana in California. If you haven't read the ballot initiative, you can do so here.

Child soldier Omar Khadr, facing the first miltiary commissions trial under Obama's revised rules, is contemplating a plea deal. It calls for 8 more years in prison and some are objecting saying it's not long enough. Reportedly, most of the additional prison time could be served in his home country, Canada, instead of Gitmo, if both Governments agree. Canada allows parole, the U.S. does not.

On "Medium" tonight, a fictional Sheriff Joe Arpaio and so far, it seems they are going to justly roast him.

Friday Morning Open Thread

I'm off to court for the day. In case BTD is also busy, here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

Update: In the news, there will be no social security increases this year for the second year in a row. Michelle Obama campaigned for Michael Bennet yesterday. The Ken Buck is ethically challenged ad aired at least five times last night.

The judge in the Ghailani terror trial released his newly redacted 63 page opinion barring the testimony of cooperator Hussein Abebe. The opinion doesn't just say his testimony was tainted by Ghailani's CIA questioning at a black hole prison, it says the judge found him incredible and that he lied about his motives for testifying.

Did Texas execute an innocent man? The case of Cameron Todd Willingham is being re-examined. (More background here and here.) A court hearing was held yesterday. No ruling yet.

Tuesday Afternoon News and Open Thread

Update: Federal judge enjoins DADT The full three page order is here.

The White House announced today it was lifting the moratorium on deepwater drilling for oil and gas.

The Chilean miners are about to begin the rescue process.

Has debtor's prison returned? A report from the Brennan Center: Criminal Justice Debt: A Barrier to Reentry examines practices in 15 states.

Many states are imposing new and often onerous “user fees” on individuals with criminal convictions. Yet far from being easy money, these fees impose severe – and often hidden – costs on communities, taxpayers, and indigent people convicted of crimes. They create new paths to prison for those unable to pay their debts and make it harder to find employment and housing as well to meet child support obligations.

I'll be at the jail the remainder of the day. Here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

Monday Night TV and Open Thread

Dancing With the Stars: Bristol Palin says she's going sexy tonight. I'm getting used to her being on the show. So long as there are no more live interviews with her mother, I'll stop complaining about her having been cast and try to focus on on her dancing.

There's also a new episode of "Weeds." On the cop show side, there's Hawaii Five-O, which isn't that bad.

Comcast/Xfinity's "Manage My DVR" went live in Denver this week. I set it up today and it actually works and is fast. I can now set recordings on my three DVR's online in one place, see what's on each at any given time and do mass deletions -- all online. I can also watch on up to three computers instead of tv if I want. If you watch a lot of TV, Xfinity has definitely stepped up its game, in a good way.

BTD is in depositions this week, but may stop by at night. This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

Friday Night Open Thread

It's snowing in the mountains.

If you are one of the few people who liked Jimmy Smits in his new show Outlaw about a conservative Supreme Court justice who quits to take on individual cases where he sees an underdog in need, you should tune in tonight. NBC has halted production on the show.

Eight episodes of Outlaw have been produced; 3 of them have already aired, with 5 more in the can. If there is a ratings uptick in the next 2 weeks, production on the show will be restarted. If not, it will become permanent.

Law and Order L.A. and The Defenders aren't doing well either. Are people not interested in crime or are the networks serving up sub-standard fare? I'll say it's the latter.

Since I'm still swamped in paperwork, here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

Thursday Night Open Thread: TV and Taxes

My DVRs are set tonight for the new Bruce Springsteen movie on HBO, The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town (footage from 1976 to 1978), Project Runway, the Apprentice and Grey's Anatomy.

I've been working all day trying to get my tax stuff ready for the accountant by tomorrow -- the October 15 deadline is right around the corner.

Since I'm not done yet, here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

Ok, there must be something more interesting to discuss today than notary publics, but I can't imagine what that is. Let me know in thread.
