Update: Peter Lanza, the father of Adam and Ryan Lanza and former husband of Nancy Lanza, has issued this statement:
"Our hearts go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones and to all those who were injured," Peter Lanza said. "Our family is grieving along with all those who have been affected by this enormous tragedy. No words can truly express how heartbroken we are. We are in a state of disbelief and trying to find whatever answers we can. We too are asking why. We have cooperated fully with law enforcement and will continue to do so. Like so many of you, we are saddened, but struggling to make sense of what has transpired."

Update: Adam Lanza's father does not live in N.J. as previously reported by the news, but in Stamford, CT. Peter Lanza is remarried and a tax specialist and VP at GE Energy Financial Services. He is also an adjunct professor at Northeastern University in Boston. Adam's uncle, James Champion, the brother of Nancy Lanza, is a police officer in New Hamphsire where they grew up, and where the Lanza family lived until 1998. Adam's grandmother, Dorothy Champion Hanson, 78, lives in Florida.
Update: 7:37 ET : ABC has a photo of Adam Lanza when he was 13. This photo is all over the internet, and looks to be a more recent one, if it's the same person (Added: It's not, it's a photo of Ryan in 2007 from his Facebook page.)
Bump and Update 6:20pm ET: This is Ryan Lanza being taken in for questioning in Hoboken. He is not involved in the shootings. He is being cooperative and said he had not been in touch with his brother in a few years. [More...]

President Obama is speaking now.
It looks like he's reading from a statement but he's not reading all of it.
We're going to have come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this regardless of the politics.Short statement. He was emotional and seemed angry to me when he walked off. It seemed to me he didn't like some of his prepared remarks. He was perusing them but not saying anything for seconds at a time.

In an interview airing today with Barbara Walters, President Obama says his administration will not interfere with the recently passed marijuana laws in Colorado or Washington legalizing recreational marijuana use. Walters asks him if he supports marijuana legalization. His response:
"I wouldn't go that far," Obama replied. "But what I think is that, at this point, Washington and Colorado, you've seen the voters speak on this issue."
"... as it is, the federal government has a lot to do when it comes to criminal prosecutions," Obama said. "It does not make sense, from a prioritization point of view, for us to focus on recreational drug users in a state that has already said that under state law, that's legal."
This may be the most-watched Barbara Walters interview ever. It airs tonight on 20/20. You can watch Obama's answer here.
Does this mean DOJ will not challenge the laws' provisions on licensing and sales?

Susan Rice will not be the next Secretary of State. She has tendered a letter to Obama asking that her name be withdrawn from consideration.
Her withdrawal leaves Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) as the leading candidate for the job. A senior administration official said “something strange would have to happen” for Kerry not to be the choice.

Watching Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi performing Born to Run, it doesn't get any better than that. The Hurricane Sandy concert is 5 hours and judging from the first half hour, it's going to be an incredible show. The Rolling Stones and the Who will also perform, among others. Billy Crystal is hosting and he's funny again. Celebrities are manning the phone banks.
Two billion people world-wide can watch.
All money donated goes to the Robin Hood Relief fund. There's a lot of ways to donate. Here's one. Or you can call 1-855-465-HELP. You can also help by ordering the music from the concert on iTunes. [More...]

Contra Spencer Ackerman, Owen Gleiberman, film reviewer for Entertainment Weekly, writes:
Part of the power of Zero Dark Thirty is that it looks with disturbing clarity at the ''enhanced interrogation techniques'' that were used after 9/11, and it says, in no uncertain terms: They worked.
As Andrew Sullivan notes, this is simply false, and is a huge moral problem for Kathryn Bigelow. She has to stand up now, it seems to me, and refute this conclusion about her film.

I think the most interesting part will be the battle over the tape of the call between the Martin family lawyers and Witness 8, aka Dee Dee.
