Sunday in Coronavirusville

It is so disheartening to have a news conference that is supposed to be factual and informative headed by Donald Trump, a man who is known for his self-serving misrepresentations on every subject.

Update: According to the numbers on the right side of the screen during the press conference, 24 Americans died since the beginning of this press conference. (from 2,414 to 2,436).

Guidelines will be released Tuesday that extend the present social distancing guidelines until April 30, 2020. (No more Easter talk).

If America had done nothing, there would have been 1-2 million deaths in the U.S. Now, there may only be 100,000 to 200,000, which means we'll have done a very good job. (The number of deaths right now is 2,436)

He says there's some kind of funny business going on with the number of masks Gov. Cuomo and Mayor De Blasio say are needed for New York. He says they went from 10,000 or 20,000 to 300,000. When he is asked whether he is saying they are hoarding, he says "hoarding or worse". [More...]

Cigna and Humana are waiving copays. "I know insurance companies better than anybody".

He thinks landlords will take it easy, they may put out a statement.

He didn't threaten a quarrantine. He mentioned it as a possibility.

When berating a reporter named Grace who he says used to work for the NY Times and now works somewhere else, he mentions a shipment of tens of thousands of "generators" that landed in a warehouse in New Jersey. Then he calls them ventilators. Then he calls them "face masks". He really loses his train of thought when challenged.

He attacks CNN. He says CNN is still covering his press conferences because ratings are so high. [This is the point at which he typically meanders into jibberish and self-promoting propoganda, so for me, it's over and out. Even Fox News just went to a commercial.]

The WHO doesn't want to share the information.

    From your own article:

Following Mr Aylward's interview, the WHO said the question of Taiwanese membership was not for its staff to answer, saying that it is instead "up to WHO member states".

It also said it has been working with Taiwanese health experts and authorities to ensure speedy information flow and to share best practices.

Our correspondent says that while this is true, and Taiwan can access WHO information shares with members and share expertise through designated communications channels, it cannot communicate as efficiently or be heard as clearly as a member would be.

All of which is, of course, part of the "One China" policy.  The same policy Trump affirmed shortly after his poorly attended inauguration.  The same policy that resulted in the State Department snubbing Taiwan just last month.

Undergirding the wingnut dilemma is the confusion between a global population and an individual. If there was only one person on the planet, Trumpism may be a viable political basis for society. But, even then to make it work, it would have to be Trump.

White House Forecasts Show Many More Deaths

March 31, 2020 at 7:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 39 Comments

President Trump's public health advisers project that the coronavirus could kill 100,000 to 240,000 Americans -- even with strict social distancing guidelines in place, Axios reports.

Meanwhile, Andy Slavitt reports "numbers floating around the White House are 400,000 and some think that requires optimism."

If it's realy one percent it will be about 3 million.

was that several talking heads on several networks have said the networks should not be carrying the Trump pressers but were over ruled because of the high ratings the pressers get.

If the major MSM networks did not carry the pressers viewers would simply switch the channel to FOX or who ever else was carrying the pressers.

As another post pointed out Trump's poll numbers have also been going up; and in some part this is attributed to the pressers.

It's about rally round the flag.  Or the leader.

When his cult members start dying by the thousands because they believed him that could change.  Real fast.

There is now talk about legal exposure for FOX because of their organized disinformation.  When people start dying their firing that one crazy woman might not be enough to cover their ass.

Cuomo is on tv right now explaining the concept of preparing for a crisis.  After the ridiculous BS from Cheeto about them "hoarding" supplies.

What Happens in November if One Side Doesn't Accept the Election Results?
How the coronavirus could contribute to a 2020 election meltdown.

The November 2020 presidential election won't be run perfectly--we have never had a perfect election conducted in this country or elsewhere--but the unique challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic add special stress to what was already going to be a difficult election and underline the need to ensure that it is run in a way that maximizes both voter access and integrity.

Even before the current crisis, I had been deeply concerned about the chances of a 2020 "election meltdown," in which the 47 percent or more of the population on the losing side would not accept the results as legitimate. I am even more worried now because of the changes and shortcuts that will be necessary to successfully run November's tally amid a pandemic. Here is what we need to do to minimize the chances of a November meltdown.

The Social-Distancing Culture War Has Begun
Across the country, social distancing is morphing from a public-health to political act.

At the driving range, while Frost and his like-minded friends slathered on hand sanitizer and kept six feet apart, the white-haired Republicans seemed to delight in breaking the new rules. They made a show of shaking hands, and complained loudly about the "stupid hoax" being propagated by virus alarmists. When their tee times were up, they piled defiantly into golf carts, shoulder to shoulder, and sped off toward the first hole.

Some of the more brazen departures from public-health consensus have carried a whiff of right-wing performance art. Jerry Falwell Jr., an outspoken Trump ally and president of the evangelical Liberty University, made headlines this week for inviting students back to campus over objections from local officials. The conservative website The Federalist published a trollish piece proposing "chicken-pox parties" as a model for strategically spreading the coronavirus. Throughout the conservative media, calls to reopen the economy--even if it means sacrificing the sick and elderly--are gaining traction.

"I would rather die than kill the country," Glenn Beck declared on his radio show.

"Those of us who are 70-plus, we'll take care of ourselves," Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said on Fox News.

Dennis Prager, a conservative commentator, even compared outbreak-mitigation efforts to Nazi appeasement: "That attitude, that the only value is saving a life ... it leads to cowardice. It has to. No one can die? Then it's not a war."

but apparently Gates is Public Enemy Number 1 to the wild-eyed anti-abortion and anti-vaxxer crowd, because he talks a lot about (gasp!) overpopulation and vaccinating the unvaccinated.

So for the time being he's usurping George Soros' place as the evil puppet master of all things unchristian and totalitarian.

I've engaged a few of these people and so far they've been uniformly of the conservative christian orientation. Which isnt to say that they all are.

by CaptHowdy on Tue Apr 07, 2020 at 09:42:50 AM EST
    I don't get this

True or not I don't get it.  Why bury someone temporarily?  Are modern caskets not "sealable" enough that they could be, I don't know, stored someplace until they could be buried?

Why even bother burying them in Central Park or anywhere else  and digging them up later?

    I'm asking.

Hence my strong belief in cremation. (5.00 / 1) (#81)
