Senate Passes "CARES" Financial Help Bill

Update: The Amendment is denied. Now they are voting on the main bill. How tone deaf are these Senators? No 6 feet clearance for them.

The "CARES" bill passes with no "nay" votes. Here is the 619 page bill as of this afternoon. I've been reading it for the last several hours (while listening to the speeches). I'm not sure if there are any changes to what they are voting on. Update: All the speeches for the past few hours have been delivered to an empty room. There are only two senators in the room during voting on the Amendment. I guess they all phoned in their votes. Why bother to have a public vote if you don't have sound for the senator's voices saying yes or no? All you can hear is a woman calling out the names and then she says how they voted. Towards the end of the vote on the Amendment, more Senators begin straggling in. [More...]

Original Post:

Republicans are now complaining about the unemployment benefits section of then Coronavirus bill. They are offering an amendment.

Republicans are claiming that as written, the bill would increase unemployment benefits so much it would pay people more not to work.

Their amendment would cap benefits at 100% of wages person was making before the virus.

Dick Durbin says that could happen in some cases, and so what? It's not a windfall and workers deserve the extra money. No one is going to quit a job over it.

Bernie Sanders gave a good speech on how absurd the Republicans' position was.

    COVID-19 Projections for Each State

March 27, 2020 at 4:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 145 Comments

A new tool from the University of Washington projects when the coronavirus outbreak will peak in each of the 50 states and how bad it'll get.

Of course, these are all projections and things could change dramatically, such as when modifications to social distancing measures are made.

3.3 Million Jobless Claims Filed Last Week

March 26, 2020 at 8:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 3 Comments

U.S. unemployment claims soared to 3.3 million as layoffs from coronavirus engulfed the economy, CNBC reports.

"The number shatters the Great Recession peak of 665,000 in March 2009 and the all-time mark of 695,000 in October 1982."

"Consensus estimates from economists surveyed by Dow Jones showed an expectation for 1.5 million new claims... The surge comes amid a crippling slowdown brought on by the coronavirus crisis."

Wall Street Journal: "Millions of Americans, already fearful the new coronavirus could infect them or their families, now have two new worries: When will the job machine start again? And can they hold out until it does?"

And does this include furloughs? (none / 0) (#5)
by Towanda on Thu Mar 26, 2020 at 01:03:11 PM EST
My son was told yesterday to furlough three-fourths of his staff. He is at a company that primarily serves schools, closed now, across the middle of the country, from the Canadian to Mexican borders. He spent the last weeks desperately coming up with work for them, such as catching up on online training. But he couldn't save their jobs.

And his salary has been cut by 20 percent. That doesn't show up in the stats.

Worse, though, is the dilemma that he faces, as he now can no longer work from home to manage staff going to clients but has to go into the field himself. He did that for a decade and finally had made it to management.

So, with a month-old infant, he faces whether to risk contracting the coronavirus out there and bringing it home. If he decides to quit, he is not, of course -- but as some in the Senate like Graham apparently do not know -- eligible for unemployment insurance.

And if he brings it home, and he and my daughter-in-law contract it, we just will have to risk it, too, taking the train to help -- in one of the cities hit hard by the pandemic and worsening by the hour.

Jobless Claims May Be Vast Undercount

March 26, 2020 at 3:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 21 Comments

"The 3.3 million new unemployment insurance claims that the Labor Department reported Thursday is likely a significant undercount, experts say, because laid-off workers have been calling into state unemployment agencies much faster than the agencies can process their requests," Politico reports.

"A tidal wave of workers trying to file claims has overwhelmed websites and jammed phone lines at state unemployment agencies, leaving states scrambling to hire more staff."

I'm rather surprised you didn't also try to blame a woman's right to reproductive freedom, like that right-wing Gov. Tate Reeves in Mississippi.

Not only that, but that ignorant ideologue further issued an executive order overriding all proactive protective measures undertaken by county and municipal officials in an effort to stem the coming COVID-19 onslaught.

But hey, Reeves did use his office to lead a prayer service via Facebook, as though we could perhaps somehow pray the coronavirus away.

Given that a likely primary vector for initial COVID-19 introduction into the United States was international air routes, perhaps you'd like to suggest a prohibition on all future overseas travel to and from our country, too.

Just like Gov. Reeves and his equally stupid friend and neighbor, Alabama Gov. But geographic naming of diseases has been the norm for a long time. Witness Spanish flu, Lyme disease, Ebola virus, Zika virus, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

So calling it the Wuhan virus is quite normal. And appropriate. That that low credibility outfit, WHO decided that term and that practice were politically incorrect doesn't mean much. Sure, the ChiComs want no association with the virus and their actions to hide their coverup, but why change historical practice to reward bad behavior?

See if you can tell the difference between the WHO reporting something about preliminary investigations from Chinese authorities at the very onset of this (Jan. 14.) and an intentional lie weeks later when much more was known.  Here, I'll show you some examples from weeks later when much more was known:

    1.  No - the virus has not been contained.  No, not everyone who wants a test can get a test.

    2.  No, the US does not have "the U.S. had "15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that's a pretty good job we've done."

    3.  No - it's not a Democratic hoax as the orange bloviator and your friends at Fox claim.

"Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) suggested Friday that a growing rift with the White House is affecting shipments of medical supplies to Michigan amid exponential growth in confirmed coronavirus cases," Crain's Detroit Business reports.

Said Whitmer: "When the federal government told us that we needed to go it ourselves, we started procuring every item we could get our hands on. What I've gotten back is that vendors with whom we had contracts are now being told not to send stuff here to Michigan."

What good would calling Trump out do right now.  If you are a governor.  One thing everyone should know by now is this is going to get worse.  Lots of people are going to die.  These governors are really trying I think.  Trying to help and protect the people of their state.  Which right now pretty much means doing nothing to "rectify the situation" and pretty much doing the best they can with what they have.

As bad as thing are and are going to get Trump could still make them way worse.  He could do it and there's nothing much anyone could do about it short of the 25th amandment.

Raise your hand if you expect that.

I say give them room to do what they have to do to navigate this nightmare without asking them to invite making it worse by calling out the Emperor for being naked.  But he will be called out for it.  I think.

This is why someone like Biden needs t speak up.  Trump can't hurt him.  He absolutely can hurt any governors or state official or lots and lots of other people who in any normal world would be screaming from the rooftops.

Who defines what significant moral stature is these days?

I am guessing you wouldn't think Paula White qualifies, but the bulk of tRump's rubes (i.e. the deplorables) probably do.

In the era of 24/7 news, social media, and marketing theories that poison the mind there will not be any consensus on this

antidote for the lethal incompetence of the president of the United States is to search for mistakes or mis-steps  of former governors.  Surely, we can also find incompetence somewhere among the nation's former mayors, county clerks and head librarians.

A critical part of corona virus pandemic response should be the provision of face masks for the masses.  The benefits  include the shielding of the mouths of the healthy, and, even  more so, the covering of the mouths of people already infected but asymptomatic.  Testing, of course, would be useful, to stages of transmission, but we do know, from other viruses  that those infected but without symptoms may be transmitters.

This Is yet another botched response--- masks for the masses, a relatively cost-effective part of the mitigation package is being discouraged not because of valueless, but because of limited supply. Not even enough for health workers.

they were in the CA stockpile. (That is, their shelf life has expired -- like food does). Same for those in the national stockpile. CDC has issued notices as to which may no longer be good and strategies for using them.

Cuomo Says Federal Quarantine Would Be Act of `War'

March 28, 2020 at 7:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 11 Comments

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told CNN that he didn't believe a possible New York quarantine was legal and that it would be a "federal declaration of war" after President Trump said he was considering such a tactic for the New York metro area coronavirus cases increase.

Said Cuomo: "It would be chaos and mayhem. It's totally opposite everything he's been saying. I don't think it is plausible. I don't think it is legal."

He added: "This would be a federal declaration of war on states."

It may be worth mentioning that according to the Supreme Court there is a constitutional right of interstate travel that neither the states nor the federal government may infringe.

and it seems to have been overlooked.  Anyone using UV light to destroy corona virus.  While it has limited applications and should not be used on things like hands/body it can be used for things like groceries, mail, packages, and a host of other things.

Hospitals are using industrial strength robots to clean rooms; faster and destroys more germs than things like alcohol/bleach/soap.

A lot of consumer products are back ordered on Amazon but I got them a while back when the VA was sending me to the Gainsville hospital and putting me up in a hoptel the night before.  Not just good for corona virus but lots of other things as well.
