Hope Hicks Resigns

Hope Hicks has resigned as Donald Trump's communications director.

Hicks is reportedly the closest of anyone to Donald Trump. The New York Times says Trump is Losing a Limb.

Describing their relationship, Michael Wolff, in Fire and Fury (p. 260) says: [More...]

the relationship of the president and Hope Hicks, long tolerated as a quaint bond between the older man and a trustworthy young woman, began to be seen as anomalous and alarming. Completely devoted to accommodating him, she, his media facilitator, was the ultimate facilitator of unmediated behavior. His impulses and thoughts— unedited, unreviewed, unchallenged—not only passed through him, but, via Hicks, traveled out into the world without any other White House arbitration.

Her role (and Jared's) in crafting Trump's response to the NY Times disclosure of Don Jr's meeting with Russians while on Air Force returning from the G-20 summit, and in the firing of James Comey, has been of interest to Mueller's investigation.

Hicks was interviewed this week by the House Intelligence Committee for 8 hours, during which she refused to answer most questions about the Trump Administration asserting executive privilege.

Fire and Fury alleges:

Miller and Hicks had drafted—or at least typed—Kushner’s version of the first letter written at Bedminster to fire Comey. Hicks had joined with Kushner and his wife to draft on Air Force One the Trump-directed press release about Don Jr. and Kushner’s meeting with the Russians in Trump Tower.

So much of Fire and Fury comes from statements purportedly from Bannon, it's nowhere a certainty that the roles of Hicks and Kushner are accurately described.

The NY Times wrote a flattering profile of her here.

Trump aides say Hicks' departure was planned for a while. The Trump family is effusive in their praise for her. But with other aides close to Jared and Ivanka also announcing their departure this week (Josh Raffle, for one) I can't help but wonder, why is she really leaving?

Vanity Fair reports:

in recent weeks, Hicks became disillusioned with her job, people who’ve spoken with her told me. Her closeness to Trump meant she was also nearest to the hottest flames of the fires that have burned in the West Wing, the most intense being the Russia probe. Hicks has racked up substantial legal fees, one source told me. “She’s in immense personal jeopardy,” one Republican close to the White House said yesterday. “This is a sign the Mueller investigation is a lot more serious than any one of us thought.” (Hicks and the White House declined to comment.)

...The tipping point for Hicks was more personal, sources said. She was “emotionally overwhelmed” by seeing herself in the headlines during her boyfriend Rob Porter’s domestic abuse scandal, one Hicks friend told me. Hicks expressed disbelief at the allegations that Porter beat his ex-wives. She’s recently told people she’s no longer dating Porter.

Another factor, according to Vanity Fair, was her worsening relationship with Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly.

Kelly pulled off a masterstroke by promulgating new security-clearance rules that neutralized his biggest West Wing rivals: Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. “The Jivanka team is crumbling,” a person close to the White House said. A day before Hicks resigned, Kushner’s spokesman Josh Raffel announced he, too, was quitting. Between the relentless chaos of the West Wing and the looming Mueller investigation, even the most committed staffers are re-evaluating their options.

Who's left that has Trump's trust besides Jared and Ivanka?

coming out of the WH from other sources that paints a picture of Jared (and Ivanka) and Hope Hicks that is every bit as accurate as anything Bannon has leaked/disclosed.

This WH is like Lord of the Flies goes to the circus; there can't possibly be be anything getting done, so occupied are they with protecting their own fortunes at the expense of everyone else.

The more isolated Trump is, the fewer people there are to keep him propped up, the more dangerous he will be.

And I don't for one minute believe John Kelly has Trump's best interests at heart - he has been steadily peeling away all the people who buffer Trump; I think Kelly wants to be the only voice whispering in Trump's ear - and that scares the crap out of me.

thought those three generals were more or less allies. The League of Adults in the Room, there to prevent the WH devolving into total chaos.
Both McMaster and Kelly were in the hot seat a week ago, but neither seem to be backing down from anybody. Mattis more or less keeping his head down and running the Pentagon as he sees fit, with little no apparent interference from tRump, I think he has the best gig in the whole mess.

is kind of old news, from a week ago
With tensions flaring between President Donald Trump and national security adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, the Pentagon is considering options that would allow the President to potentially move the three-star general out of his current role and back into the military, according to half a dozen defense and administration officials.

A search is quietly being conducted by the Pentagon to see if there is a four-star military job suited for McMaster, these officials said.

I don't think this a "plot" by Kelly and Mattis to throw him overboard as much as a plan to provide a life boat.

Admiral Harwood who was first offered the job, famously called it a s*ht sandwich. I'm thinking the McMaster has probably had enough.

McMaster really soiled himself defending the President. I don't  believe he understood yet how crooked and comprised Trump Familia was. How could he not know? The soldier bubble he's lived in. Nobody that sheltered would believe that an American family is that crooked.

Kelly has soiled himself so badly, we must never allow it to be forgotten what he did. I know they both want a do over, but this was never a game.

McMaster will write a book though.

    He wants out

I would not be surprised if he has brought up to Mattis and Kelly that he cannot obey illegal orders, and Jared being so compromised he's making it into national security reports was probably the last straw for him and enabling illegalities while in uniform. Kelly and Mattis are no longer in uniform and not bound by the UCMJ like McMaster is.

Originally McMaster hoped that another 4 star Korea command slot would be created, and he would take that and try to stop Trump from going to war with North Korea. And the Korean theater is the theater that McMaster is most knowledgeable on. But Mattis said no to a second 4 star Korea command. I don't know what his reasons were for that. But that was before things were this bad in the White House. I think both Kelly and Mattis will do what they can to help McMaster find a way out now.

Apparently, Steve Bannon was part of the anti-Ivanka/Jared clique when he was part of the Trump administration. Afterward, he authored derisive and mocking articles of them on Breitbart News before being ostracized from the site.

    Vanityfair:

Bannon's real undoing in the eyes of his boss, according to three people familiar with the situation, involves his perceived attacks through the media against Kushner and Ivanka as liberal Democrats seeking to undermine a more conservative agenda.

didn't know that? It was obvious from day one from the torrent of leaks they aimed at each other.

Kushner is almost the perfect enemy of the original Breitbart base(socially liberal NYC elite Jew globalist)), the base that Bannon rallied to carry tRump. The Breitbart community basically supported Bannon throughout his tenure only turning him when he outwardly turned on tRump. Even then it's more about the Mercer's money tan pissing off the "boss".
