Yom Kippur and Open Thread

It's almost sundown which means Yom Kippur will begin. Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, is the holiest day of the year for Jews. From sundown to sundown tomorrow, there is no work and no food.

Here is a link to the services live-stream from the Reform congregation at the 92nd St Y in Manhattan.

For those not observing, here's a new open thread, all topics welcome.

guys really want to help you.  Gary Cohn, former president of Goldman Sachs and Trump's "with it" Director of the Economic Council, says about the tax plan: "if we allow a family to keep another $1,000 of their income....they can buy a new car or renovate their kitchen, or take a family vacation."

He seems nice. I will now go out and look for a new car for $1,000, maybe a Mercedes. Next year, the kitchen. No vacation, by the third year, I will need another car.

We kept the cupboards because they were local handmade oak. But we used an oil base high performance paint on the bases, and we used a Rustoleum cabinet refacing paint sprayed on on the doors. I think the paint alone cost us $1,000.

New countertops were $6,000. We installed those ourselves. We did well on the appliances. Induction ranges weren't very well known yet. Lowe's sold us ours on sale for under $500. As the house was closing I already grieved the loss of it, and looked up how much it would cost to replace it in my future. The US knows what an induction range is now. It'll start at around $1,000. The matching convection microwave was selling poorly then too. We picked it up for around $250. Our wonderful matching frig though $1500. Natural slate floor, inexpensive but very difficult to do it yourself install, the real cost for that would have been installation. We did all the sweat ourselves. I have no idea what the tab should have come to, what our labor was worth.

And for BTD especially, this is very personal. Given that today's insults of San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz today were delivered from the safe and comfy confines of his New Jersey country club, Trump's choice of words were particularly obnoxious and absolutely appalling, even by the most jaded standards we've set for him.

(For some perspective, Mayor Yulin is the one who's wading in waste-deep water and holding the bullhorn.)

Retired Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré offered the ultimate droll putdown of the bubble-headed Grifter-in-Chief: "I have no reaction. The mayor's living on a cot, and I hope the President has a good day of golf."

I cannot even begin to imagine how the people of Puerto Rico must be feeling.

This is the first I am seeing this development - my youngest grandson (21 months) landed in the ER this morning with his 2nd episode of what is probably asthma, and after going there to help wrangle him for the 1-hour breathing treatment, brought the almost-5 yr old home with me - we've been making cookies and doing a lot of drawing.

So, apparently, Trump doesn't like people ripping away the I'm-so-wonderful facade of self-praise he wraps himself in, and he lashes out to punish those he sees as responsible - it's always someone else's fault.  It's entitlement packaged with narcissism and salted with grandiosity.

And I am with those who think this is also disaster capitalism at work.

Meanwhile, I don't know how much longer he can keep this up before he completely falls apart mentally, or someone sees to it that he falls apart.

And the last time there was a tax holiday for earnings parked overseas, the argument was that allowing corporations to bring it back would create jobs.  It didn't - all that money went to higher dividends, stock buybacks and higher CEO pay and bonuses.  There is nothing to suggest it will be different this time.

Mnuchin claims it's unfair to judge without all the details that will be worked out, but there's a reason no details have been released: they want to get as much lying BS out there as possible before people find out the truth.

Nationwide, there are still an estimated 3,000 Klan members and unaffiliated people who "identify with Klan ideology," according to the ADL. Membership, though, remains spread across dozens of groups. The largest Klans reportedly don't have more than 50 to 100 active members, and most have fewer than 25.

Keeping with historical trends, the ADL noted the groups and activity are largely concentrated in the southern and eastern parts of the nation. Mississippi was found to house the most with five groups, followed by Alabama with four.

First, no small, dissident political group of any stripe advertises its internal organizational or planning meetings, or meets (or ever has met) "in public." Why should they? Second, as we all know, there is another political group devoted to using any means, including violence, to attack and suppress these idiots whenever, wherever and however possible. Advertising their meetings invites such attacks. You don't have to be the least bit sympathetic to the neo-nazi thugs to acknowledge that this is true. What everyone else was pointing out, again, is that this hardly the first time linea has commented on this subject.  Or demonstrated a frightening ignorance of it.

So perhaps it's "history" that is the problem.

And of course your comment on the rights involved are flawless.

I was surprised the healthcare protest at the hearing went off as well as it did because the details of the plan were put out so far in advance.

    I get it.

But righties have infiltrated my groups. I haven't killed anyone yet :)

had an interesting interview on MTP.  he more or less said "if the tax plan adds one penny to the deficit, iwill not support it".

there ya go.  first we know it will.  second there will be more than two others who agree with Corker.

Trumps tax plan is as dead as his Obamacare repeal.

anything that could possibly pass in the senate will not pass in the house.  assuming "the Hastert Rule" which IMO we must.

Ryan is in far to much hot water with the base already to flip off the Freedumb Caucus.

walk or chew gum at the same time. Too busy trying to take away health insurance from adults and not allow it to go away for children. This is their only legislative "accomplishment" other than permitting purchase of guns by  certain mentally disabled---unless you count Post Office naming (all their failures, of course and thankfully, are all to the good).
