Tuesday Night DNC: Clinton Time

I just tuned on the TV for the first time today. I caught the last part of Madeline Albright and thought she was terrific. I purposely waited until certain mothers were finished.

Now it's time for Bill Clinton.

"In the spring of 1971, I met a girl."

Bill looks very healthy, rested and tan.

He met Hillary at law school and it took him a few days to talk do anything but stare at her. She finally came up to him and said, "I'm Hillary Rodham, who are you?"

"We've been walking and talking and laughing together ever since." Through good times and bad, joy and heartbreak. "We built up a lifetime of memories."

"Knowing her was one of the greatest gifts Hillary ever gave me." [More....]

In 1975, "I married my best friend."

    Bill Clinton gave a marvelous speech. (5.00 / 6) (#3)

The media's all cluck-clucking about its supposed shortcomings, but hopefully they'll realize sometime before November that their increasingly vapid opinions don't mean squat.

Andrea Mitchell was talking with Sen. Al Franken on the convention floor last night after last night's speeches, during an impromptu MSNBC roundtable with him and other reporters. For his part, Franken noted that not only was Trump was one of the original birthers, but also that he lied both about his "investigations in Hawaii" into Obama's birth certificate and later, about how he had witnessed thousands of Muslims dancing in America dancing after the 9/11 attacks.

Mrs. Greenspan simply shrugged and offered her opinion that "facts don't seem to matter in this campaign." Whereupon Al Franken very politely admonished her and the other MSNBC reporters who were seated with them over that attitude:

"I think they still matter. I think, at the end of the day, facts still matter. And you know? I would challenge you" -- as he pointed to the other reporters -- "all of you, to make them matter, and repeat them when there are lies. I would say that the media, you know, I used to write quaint books, called 'Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them,' and I think people think, 'wow, there used to be books about when people lied, and now no one cares.' You guys have kind of a job to do." (h/t to Frances Langum at C&L.)

As did Sen. Franken last night, Bill Clinton pushed back hard tonight against the false narratives maligning his wife. Yes, facts really DO matter, and yes, people DO care about the truth. And further, members of the media really need to do a much better job in the future to set the record straight and not let such obvious falsehoods pass unchallenged.

    Aloha.

Kaine did "a terrible job as governor of New Jersey. And, he is still not very popular with the people of New Jersey."  Now, this is an easy one to explain. Trump was no doubt thinking of the guy who runs his McDonald's service.

Some Kaine "Dad tweets" making the rounds:

Joe Biden's Trans Am pulls out and Tim Kaine's minivan pulls in.
Tim Kaine is the dad who finds your alcohol stash and says, I was disappointed, but I am glad you did it here.
Tim Kaine is your friend's dad who catches you smoking weed at a sleepover, and doesn't rat you out, but talks to you about brain development.

what Bill did. But, I think the point of the speech was to highlight Hillary and what she has worked for her entire life and what she has accomplished thus far. Things that even those who are familiar with Hillary's history might be unaware. It was not to showcase Bill's failings as a husband of which we are all aware.

Speaking for myself only, I saw a man who loves and admires his wife. Relationships are complicated, Mr K. Ones that have lasted 40+ years, even more so.

Hillary will fix my f#ck ups and start to undo the damage done. She will surrender the drug war I escalated, she will empty the cages I filled, she will revoke the license to steal I gave Wall St.

Not that I'd believe him, as he has no credibility...but that's how I'd sell it.

But I get it...conventions are for spin and advertising and writing checks you can't cash. As far as that fluff goes, the Dems are worlds ahead of Repubs. You guys give good show. Broadway compared to a 2nd Grade school play. If the people vote on production values, lock it up for Hil.

    Donald wanted to arm teachers
    CNN
Trump responded Sunday morning on Fox News with a muddled comment that seemed to both reject and reaffirm his support for arming teachers in classrooms.
"I don't want to have guns in classrooms, although in some cases teachers should have guns in classrooms, frankly," he said.
Trump conceded Monday to CNN that his proposal would introduce guns into schools, but rejected Clinton's description of his view.
"The way she said it meant like every student should be sitting there carrying guns," Trump said. "If trained people had guns, you wouldn't have the carnage that you've had."
"The problem with gun free zones is it's like offering up candy to bad people," he said Monday. "They hear gun free zones and they go in there with their guns blazing

by linea on Wed Jul 27, 2016 at 11:54:45 PM EST
are schools gun-free zones by federal legislation or state? i thought it was state legislation. but even if it were federal, recinding that (assumed) statute would not necesarilly mean teachers would be able to have guns in classrooms.

i found the statute and it's a law from 1990 prohibiting guns on school grounds unless one has a license to carry the gun. it's a federal law.

it would be a better law if it didnt have that exemption (but that's just my feelings).  if students carry a gun to school they get expelled, a teacher would get fired, but some random goof with a handgun carry permit can wander into the student union? i dont really like that.
