Indonesia to Execute French Drug Offender

Convicted drug offender Frenchman Serge Atlaoui has lost his appeal challenging the denial of clemency. He was scheduled to be executed with Australians Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan and six others in April, but the date was pushed back because of his pending appeal.

Indonesia says it will schedule his execution after Ramadan is over in mid July. [More...]

Atlaoui, a welder, was arrested in 2005 in a secret drugs factory outside Jakarta and authorities accused him of being a "chemist" at the site.

But the Frenchman has maintained his innocence, claiming that he was installing machinery in what he thought was an acrylics plant.

He was initially sentenced to life in prison but the Supreme Court increased the sentence to death on appeal.

There are beautiful beaches all over the world. Please do not give your tourist dollars to a country that executes non-violent drug offenders. Visit Mauritius, the Seychelles, Fiji or the Maldives instead.

if Mr. Hollande, President of France, will issue an appeal to French nationals, as well as citizens of the world, to boycott Bali if they go ahead with this atrocity.

I"ve seen leaders bemoaning and lamenting, but not threatening strong economic sanctions.

We need an international movement equivalent to the revulsion aimed against apartheid.

But as long as it's only hand-wringing and expressions of regret, these atrocities will continue.
