ISIS Releases Dabiq Issue #8

Issue #8 of the Islamic State's English magazine, Dabiq, has been released. The cover title says "Shari'ah Alone Will Rule Africa."

As with prior issues, the last article is one by British hostage John Cantlie. It's called "The Paradigm Shift" and in it he asserts that the only viable course for the west is a truce with ISIS. [More...]

At some stage, you’re going to have to face the Islamic State as a country, and even consider a truce. If there’s no military only solution to the Islamic State, and that’s already on the record as being the case, then after you’ve tried getting the other Sahwah tribes to turn against it and finished mucking around trying to find ways to cut their funding or shut down their media message (which has already cost the US well in excess of $1.3 billion and completely failed) at some point the only option left will be an offer of a truce.

...War is entirely predictable in that it can only lead to one of two outcomes. Either one side emerges victorious while the other is vanquished, or some kind of truce is reached. It is the only way wars end, and America and its allies will never win this war. They know it and everyone else knows it as well. At some stage the only option that can prevail for America and the West is the sensible one.

The editor adds a note to Cantlie's article, pointing out that any truce would be temporary.

People skimming might miss that part.

"Since Cantlie is a prisoner of ISIL and therefore is necessarily speaking under duress, it is unclear whether and to what degree he actually holds these views. His sister, Jessica Cantlie, has claimed that John Cantlie "believes two-thirds" of what he says in the videos."

I doubt his sister wants to totally discount his worth to ISIL as a tool. Indeed, I'll say (here, under the radar as it is) that she is showing bravery by implying he isn't speaking exactly what he thinks. And here amongst friends I'll suggest that he's probably trying to ingratiate himself to ISIL by letting them "win" in their discussions with him.

Everyone likes being acknowledged as being in the right. Even (or especially!) fanatics who are prepared to behead you for being an unbeliever.

I doubt the ISIL types he is dealing with are anything less than sharp so that could be an amazing game he is forced to run.
