Meet the Press must officially have (5.00 / 1) (#2)
by Anne on Thu Sep 04, 2014 at 08:27:33 AM EST
a death wish (not that I watch it anymore):

    Via Digby (and Page Six):

NBC is bringing in Luke Russert, son of the late beloved "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert, as a regular panelist on the Sunday morning show in a bid to turn around its catastrophic ratings slide, Page Six has exclusively learned.

Also joining new moderator Chuck Todd's team will be former Republican congressman and "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough, who sources say "is taking on a larger role within NBC News as a senior political analyst and would be one of the regular Sunday panelists."

We're told the move is part of a plan to bring a right-leaning voice to the program to appeal to viewers turned off by the show's famously left-leaning former hosts including the ousted David Gregory.

Wow...Luke Russert on the panel, Scarborough taking on a larger role as a "senior political analyst" and on the panel..oh, I can't wait to get Charlie Pierce's reaction to this news...

And I don't think people were turned off by Gregory's so-called leftward leanings, but by his utter suckitude: no one sucked up better to the Washington power elite than David Gregory, did they?

Might have to temporarily end my self-imposed break from watching it to see just how awful the new cast of characters is (and for what it's worth, I have been following the general sucking of the Sunday shows via Charlie's regular Monday feature on them - not by actually giving up precious weekend time to watch them)

Now--and in view of the change coming for the other prosaic Washington media source, the Washington Post--I wonder how or if the observers will see the prospects for the WP's direction under the new publisher, Frank Ryan.  When I read that Frank Ryan would be at the helm, I was thankful not to be eating at the time.  Apparently, Frank Ryan worked for Ronald Reagan during his Presidency and, later, founded the right-of-center (imo) Politico.com.

Bets on which writer(s) will depart in the next year ... Sargent, Dionne???  Somehow, I expect that the likes of Cilizza and Milbank will be featured more & more.

There is so much wacked about that quote.  Where to start??
Russert Sr, beloved by who for gods sake.  DC cocktail party circuit I guess.  As far as his mewling larvae I can't stand to look at that fool.  He is, in one package, EVERYTHING that's f@cked about DC "journalism".  If his last name was Jones he would be wearing an orange vest in a Home Depot someplace.  And rounding it out is Banjo Boy.  Words fail.

Clearly they are going for the FOX crowd.  I never under stood how Luke Bigtalker could stay employeed until one day when I was doing meals on wheels I walked into "the home" and on the screen was Luke and every blue, pink and bald head in the place was glued to the "force" emanating from his dimples.  Rheumy eyes glazed.

BRING a right leaning voice? Last time I watched - ok, admittedly that was back in the Russert pere days - it was predominantly right leaning voices among the panel and guests. In fact folks such as Charlie called the show "Meet the Republicans".

From the link, is this cat from the National Council of Chain Restaurants serious?

But the National Council of Chain Restaurants, an industry trade group, took issue with the protesters. "While it is common for labor unions to stage events in order to grab media attention, encouraging activities that put both restaurant workers and their customers in danger of physical harm is not only irresponsible, it's disturbing," said executive director Rob Green, in a statement. "Unions are calling it 'civil disobedience' when in reality, this choreographed activity is trespassing and it's illegal."

Interesting definition of disturbing there guy...what most people find disturbing is the pittance your "restaurants" pay the people who make the burgers that pay your f*ckin' bloated salary Boss.

There have been failures of imagination

The most ludicrous excuse for shrinking our military derives from the president's thinking: "Things are much less dangerous now than they were 20 years ago, 25 years ago or 30 years ago." The "safer world" trial balloon has been punctured by recent events in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt, Gaza, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria and Iraq. "Failures of imagination" led to tragedy 13 years ago; today, no imagination is required to picture what would descend on the United States if we let down our guard.

I always wave neighborly...I think Jesus had a point in this trying to love your neighbor thing.  He didn't really wave back, it was more of a "There's the sinner going to hell" nod.

He put on Facebook right after he got back that he wanted to be an established missionary to Uganda, but that did not bear fruit I guess. So then he put up he was on God's plan or something....and then I continue to happen to him :). Oh yeah, and I'm putting up gay rights postings that challenge who was in Genesis.  He's on my Facebook.  He knows I'm going to hell :)

For instance, from the premises some A are B, some B are C, people tend to come to a definitive conclusion that therefore some A are C.[15][16] However, this does not follow according to the rules of classical logic. For instance, while some cats (A) are black things (B), and some black things (B) are televisions (C), it does not follow from the parameters that some cats (A) are televisions (C). This is because in the structure of the syllogism invoked (i.e. III-1) the middle term is not distributed in either the major premise or in the minor premise a pattern called the "fallacy of the undistributed middle".

"That's not true," Obama interjected. "Oh, you didn't want a status of forces agreement?" Romney asked as an argument ensued. "No," Obama said. Good Thing #1:  The D.C. Circuit has ordered rehearing of the Halbig case.  Halbig is one of two recent Circuit (D.C. and 4th) decisions as to permissibility of federal subsidies in those states where the federal government operates the ACA program.  As you may recall, the D.C. Circuit 3-judge panel disallowed that approach and the 4th Circuit 3-judge allowed.  Given the potentially favorable make-up of the whole D.C. Circuit for this rehearing (the opposite of the earlier 3-judge situation), this could be a Good Thing.

Good Thing #2:  The Greg Orman situation in Kansas. Orman has vowed, if he wins, to caucus with the Independents in the Senate (namely, B. Sanders and A. King.) When the Democratic candidate withdrew, Orman is expected to gain the Dem votes. BTW, Orman has been polling ahead of Repub incumbent, Pat Roberts.  It is fascinating.  It also represents one of those "surprises" that happens in every election season.

I've attended numerous planning/zoning board meetings where legitimate phone companies were applying for permission to erect towers. The degree of scrutiny the boards put them through are maddingly strict. The public wants good cell phone service; they just don't want to see unsightly towers. In some of those applications the attorneys have to come back a dozen, or, more, times, and, still don't get approval.

There's no way those towers exist without the proper authorities knowing everything there is to know about them.

my maternal grandfather walked around with an oxygen tank the last years of his life, don't know if it was COPD or just bad emphysema or what.  I think serving in WWII on a submarine had a lot to do with that...who knows what kinda asbestos and other sh*t he breathed in on the sub.

Other than him all the family's smokers died at what I'd call an old age for reasons unrelated to smoking.  Genetically speaking, I like my odds.

We all gotta go somehow someway someday.  I'll try to quit if and when I stop enjoying it and not a second sooner.  I tell ya the more time I am spending caring for my 90-something great-uncle the more I am convinced I definitely wanna die before I get even close to that old. He becomes a more miserable bag of bones by the day...it's sad.

    And I didn't say anyone couldn't smoke.

It just should be sold in a more restricted manner.

like I said, no skin off my back, I quit buying my smokes from the descendants of European invaders years ago...the Native Americans treat me much better.  Recently started timing my runs to the rez to buy my gas there too...saving 60 cents a gallon.  I'm such an idiot, it took me years to realize the Poopsatucks sell gas.

With any luck, in the near future my reefer purchases will be legal and my tobacco purchases illegal.  Who woulda ever thunk it?  Well maybe not near future, NY State will be one the last to wise up I'm afraid.

All I hope is you're still here when I'm dying...and living quality, not just quantity.  I could change my mind of course, but right now I'm all about quality and tobacco adds quality.

I'll let you know next week if my charred lungs still get me down the gridiron on kickoffs faster than the non-smoking youngsters.  I've lost a little quickness, but the speed is still hanging in there...just takes a couple extra strides to get the engine going full bore.  Opening Day Sunday!

Hodor and Bran are not heavily featured in the books that the show should now be following so it makes sense to just leave them out.

They I would assume figure into the master storyline that will wrap this whole mess up in the unwritten books.

Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin is going to kill more of your favorite characters

According to Martin when speaking to BuzzFeed, "I have a large number of important characters who I switch between to tell the entirety of the story, and that limits who I can kill."

"Sometimes there's only one character who's my eye in a particular location, and if I kill that character everything going on in that particular subplot is going to be lost."

"The way my books are structured, everyone was together, then they all went their separate ways and the story deltas out like that."

"Now it's getting to the point where the story is beginning to delta back in, and the viewpoint characters are meeting up with each other and being in the same point at the same time."

... Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens:

"It was all Mrs. Bumble. She would do it," urged Mr. Bumble; first looking round, to ascertain that his partner had left the room.

"That is no excuse," returned Mr. Brownlow. "You were present on the occasion of the destruction of these trinkets, and, indeed, are the more guilty of the two, in the eye of the law; for the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction."

"If the law supposes that," said Mr. Bumble, squeezing his hat emphatically in both hands, "the law is a ass -- a idiot. If that's the eye of the law, the law is a bachelor; and the worst I wish the law is, that his eye may be opened by experience -- by experience."

Blaming the spouse didn't work for Mr. Bumble, either. As for the now-convicted former Gov. and Mrs. McDonnell, the law indeed proved itself a bachelor in its application.

    Aloha.

... the ambulatory surgical center where Ms. Rivers was undergoing a minor elective procedure at the time she suffered cardiac arrest, is now under investigation by New York health officials.

Her type of humor was often a little too caustic for my taste. But there's no doubt that she was a true pioneer and trailblazer for women in the fields of stand-up comedy and late-night talk shows, both of which have been -- and still are -- dominated by men, and she paid an enormous price both professionally and personally for her efforts, with her blackballing by Johnny Carson and her husband's later suicide.

It's never easy to be the first to break a glass ceiling, and Ms. Rivers proved herself to be one very tough and resilient dame, in the very best sense of the term. For that, she should always be remembered with reverence and affection.

"diplomats and defense officials from the United States, Britain, France, Australia, Canada, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Poland and Denmark". Financing from Saudi Arabia. Intelligence from Jordan. UAE willing to help.

"officials present made clear that at the moment, any ground combat troops would come from either Iraqi security forces or Kurdish pesh merga fighters on the ground in Iraq, or from moderate Syrian rebels"

"And even as Mr. Obama weighs expanding airstrikes into Syria, both he and his administration have been questioning what might happen after launching those strikes, especially as targeting ISIS in Syria would help the government of Mr. Assad"

California Attorney General, Kamala Harris, announced that she will appeal a federal court ruling that the California death penalty system, as it now exists, is unconstitutional.  Ironically, Harris has stated a personal opposition to the death penalty but, explained her decision to appeal as follows: "I am appealing the court's decision because it is not supported by law, and it undermines important protections that our courts provide to defendants."  Hmm... curious.  Looks like a Ninth Circuit showdown is coming up.
