RIP Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers has died.

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers," Melissa Rivers said in a written statement today. "She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.

Making the decision to remove a loved one from life support is heart-wrenching. Even though you know it is the right thing to do, it is never easy.

    The world just got a little less funny. (5.00 / 4) (#2)

RIP Joan, and peace to her family.

Shows again that there is no such thing as minor surgery. I hope she was the kind of person to realize that and have her affairs in order just in case. Probably was. I really feel bad for her family. No one is prepared for that kind of shock.

Actually I have some first hand experience since my brother-in-law died in much the same way in June. Went in for a biopsy and arrested on the table.

"We may, indeed, say that the hour of death is uncertain, but when we say so we represent that hour to ourselves as situated in a vague and remote expanse of time, it never occurs to us that it can have any connexion with the day that has already dawned, or may signify that death -- or its first assault and partial possession of us, after which it will never leave hold of us again -- may occur this very afternoon, so far from uncertain, this afternoon every hour of which has already been allotted to some occupation.

It is a complicated situation, my sister and her husband had been separated for a couple of years. It was most horrible for their kids, who are both in college. I accept your good wishes on their behalf.

since he had just been diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer and  had been told he had a few months at most, of pain and suffering, and his kids watching him have to go through that.  Of course the kids needed more time with him though. It was way too fast for them.

So in that way it is not like Joan Rivers at all since I don think she had a life threatening illness before the surgery.

I enjoyed learning more about her in recent years during her appearances on The Howard Stern Show.  I liked her so much I started to catch "The Fashion Police" just to listen to her one liners about celebrities.

Incredibly funny women who came from another generation and told it like it is.  She was never afraid to be both honest and funny.

    She will be missed.

    A life well lived.

Boy George is all England needs - another queen who can't dress.

I have no sex appeal; if my husband didn't toss and turn, we'd never have had the kid.

I'm not saying she's easy, but she's been in so many motel rooms her nickname is `Gideon.'

    From her book

"When I die, I want my funeral to be a huge showbiz affair with lights, cameras, action...I want Craft services, I want paparazzi and I want publicists making a scene! I want it to be Hollywood all the way. I don't want some rabbi rambling on; I want Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents. I don't want a eulogy; I want Bobby Vinton to pick up my head and sing "Mr. Lonely." I want to look gorgeous, better dead than I do alive. I want to be buried in a Valentino gown and I want Harry Winston to make me a toe tag. And I want a wind machine so that even in the casket my hair is blowing just like Beyoncé's."
