Romney Campaign Plans Damage Control For Reaction To Libya Events

CNN reports on the Romney campaign's planned damage control talking points:

Questions & Answers:

Don’t you think it was appropriate for the embassy to condemn the controversial movie in question? Are you standing up for movies like this?

– Governor Romney rejects the reported message of the movie. There is no room for religious hatred or intolerance. [..] But we will not apologize for our constitutional right to freedom of speech.

[...] If pressed: Governor Romney repudiated this individual in 2010 when he attempted to mobilize a Quran-burning movement. He is firmly against any expression of religious hatred or intolerance.

[More . . .]

Reports indicate the embassy in Cairo released its initial statement before the invasion of the embassy commenced. Doesn’t this show they were trying to tamp down the protest and prevent what ultimately happened, not sympathize with the protesters?

The Administration was wrong to stand by a statement sympathizing with those who had breached our embassy in Egypt instead of condemning their actions. [...] Distancing themselves from the statement and saying it wasn't ‘cleared by Washington’ reflects the mixed signals they are sending to the world. [...] American leadership needs to be decisive and resolute when our interests are threatened or attacked. For the last four years, this has been lacking. [...] We have seen a foreign policy of weakness, indecision, and a decline in American influence and respect – and yesterday we saw the consequences.

– If pressed: The Obama campaign is now attacking Governor Romney for being critical of the same statement the Administration itself disavowed. This is hypocritical.

Did Governor Romney “jump the gun” last night in releasing his statement?

– No. It is never too soon to stand up for American values and interests.

Note that many of the proposed answers are nonsensical.

Even Andrea Mitchell is shredding Mitt on her show (5.00 / 4) (#1)

    Yes, that Andrea Mitchell.

I hope Mitt starts polling in the mid-30s so that these neanderthals that are the face of the GOP recede to the shadows.

We have seen a foreign policy of weakness, indecision, and a decline in American influence and respect - and yesterday we saw the consequences.

They're blaming Obama for what happened, basically?

    This is their "damage control"?

    Does seem like it, (5.00 / 2) (#4)

doesn't it?  Who is running Romney's campaign, and who is vetting his statements? He's surrounded by a bunch of idiots.

an idiot for keeping them on his staff.

Just as bad is that Romney is too stupid to see on his own that his remarks were shameful and dishonest.

    IMO - conclusion:

Romney is too stupid to be President.

born into wealth and privilege, he would have been too stupid to be a garbage collector (not meaning any disrespect for garbage collectors, who do an essential job).

trouble making a living.  He had all the breaks:

$1 million from his father to "start out"

A name that opened doors in the business world

The name opened doors to prestigious private schools and universities

Like Donald Trump, who couldn't have made a lot of money with that sendoff.

But what got him the mega bucks (and who knows if there's a lot more stashed that we don't know about) was that start and a complete lack of conscience.

it's being run by Romney himself.  He doesn't seem the sort to allow someone other than himself to give orders or make decisions.

    I can't recall when a news organization like CNN.. (none / 0) (#3)

has released a campaign's or party's talking points in advance of them being used. Is it rare for a CNN to get these, is it rare for them to release the talking points, or both?

    Very interesting.

    Does seem unusual, but, really, we're going (5.00 / 1) (#5)

to read them now, or see and hear them later by everyone with (R) after his or her name, aren't we?  Not much difference, but odd that CNN would get out in front of it.  Maybe they've concluded the man is not fit for office, who knows?

Reading them, there was nothing there that surprised me - I think we all could have guessed what they would be.

I'm just shaking my head, pondering a Romney presidency where the talking points, retractions, apologies, and revisionist history will be the size of the Oxford English Dictionary before 100 days - and the diplomatic corps has to be doubled to keep up with it all.

Iraq redux.  What would a Romney Presidency offer abroad? Well, Bill Kristol congratulated Romney today (along with Sen. DeMint).  Iraq on steroids.

It dropped right on his head. Maybe someone hand-walked the talking points right to the studio.
