Ezra Klein: Joe Lieberman A Dem Hero?

Submitted for your consideration.

I think the answer is no. Pretty sure Fred Hiatt answers in the affirmative.

is going out on a high note--after all, it is always good to leave before you wear out your welcome, right.  Ezra no doubt knows that his assessment will be unpopular, but then, Ezra is nothing if not a profile in courage.  Indeed, his column's commenters are not entirely in agreement with his evaluation.   However,  this column will  assure Ezra White House access and assist Joe as he enters political rehabilitation camp in preparation for his new post in the Obama administration.

    Ezra points out:

...he skipped the meetings* where Democrats were trying to work out a compromise on the public option, and then he killed the Medicare buy-in proposal they'd developed -- despite endorsing that exact proposal months before. In doing so, he doomed a great piece of policy, and by doing it at the last minute, endangered the rest of the bill, too. But the reality is that the legislation simply wouldn't have passed without his vote. And after extracting his pound of flesh, he voted "aye."

    Followed immediately by:

That wasn't Lieberman's only moment as a good soldier for the Democrats:

According to Ezra, that was Joe being a good soldier.

I wonder if E will feel the same way when he has a child -- and realizes what Joe was really doing.

Well John Wilkes Booth wasn't all that bad either because he helped things along....ya know, move forward and don't look back... and he helped get us further down the road on our way to the Obama signed healthcare reform bill :)  He was a good soldier :)

Lieberman was a good soldier for Obama and the Democrats. He killed the Medicare buy-in proposal the Dems threw out there for effect and helped Obama keep the bargain he struck with the medical industry while deferring the blame.

But match.com and eharmony, and all that jazz is somehow ok now?  That, IMO, would be way sketchier.

One of the biggest enclaves of gay parenting is taking place in our country today?  New York?  Nope.  San Francisco?  Nope.  Boston?  Nope.

    How about Jackonsonville, Florida?

The changes may seem surprising for a city where churches that have long condemned homosexuality remain a powerful force. But as demographers sift through recent data releases from the Census Bureau, they have found that Jacksonville is home to one of the biggest populations of gay parents in the country.

In addition, the data show, child rearing among same-sex couples is more common in the South than in any other region of the country, according to Gary Gates, a demographer at the University of California, Los Angeles. Gay couples in Southern states like Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas are more likely to be raising children than their counterparts on the West Coast, in New York and in New England.

    Hmmm.....

I wonder how much of a role culture plays.  For example, are straight couples/people in general also more likely to have children in the south?

I would guess that the answer to that is yes.

    Parent

    My guess (none / 0) (#49)
by jbindc on Thu Jan 20, 2011 at 09:53:17 AM EST
Is that while your theory might have something to do with it, I think it also might have to do more with more gay couples in places like NY, DC, and SanFran have (in general) more disposable income, so, pooling their resources and moving in together and having a house in the 'burbs with kids is not necessarily the lifestyle many urban gays want.  I would also venture to guess that more urban gay couples are a bit younger than those that live in the South (as the article describes, many of the gay couples in the South have already been married and started families before they come out - whereas, since it is more acceptable in places like NY, many gay couples are not middle age).
