    Yeah, they beat us 15 to 13 in his first year at ISU ('07).  The start of a 4 game losing streak that lead to a 6-6 season, even with a ton of future NFL players on the team*.  Overall, he was 5-19 in two seasons.

    ...my Granddad and Dad both played for them, my siblings both went there and I used to go to a lot of games as a kid (I had a friend whose family were/are BIG boosters) and I bleed black and gold now.  So, no.

    Did your brother manage to get his place in the hills sold?

    flowers has been lately?  I like running into the grocery store and picking up some flowers along with everything else.  It just feels terrific to me to have some flowers around, but wow the prices went off the charts last year.  I noticed that they are getting to be more affordable again at the grocery store too lately.

    I also remember from that two minutes a disdain for high ranking officers. I think his opinion of anyone higher than 0-6 was 'political,' not 'leader of soldiers.' I could tell he loved enlisted ranks. Flag ranks? I didn't get that impression. Oh, it was well more than 20 years ago, closer to 30 I guess, at a 101st Airborne Division function.

    The epitome of grace. Not what one would expect of an airborne company and battalion combat commander. Did you know he was put in for the Medal?

    He didn't get it because there was a one-medal-per-division quota after Normandy.

    Helicopters is the way to go now. When I tell Militarytracy I'dlove it if her hubby 'happened' to land in my town to check something, I'd love a few minutes of OH-6 time.

    Now it's MH or AH, but she's still the old LOACH to me.

    When cooking veggies that are alum-based (onion and garlic family) such as leeks, or cruciferous veg that have a lot of sulpher (broccoli, cauli etc) never go higher than 210 degrees.

    Visually, the surface of the liquid will barely tremble and you'll see graceful S-shaped wisps of steam rise off the water. This longer, gentler process coaxes out maximum flavor and keeps it "true" without suddenly turning bitter, as can happen with these veggies (also kombu/seaweeds and most teas) when subjected to an all-out boiling.

    This is also a great process to use for veggie stock from the (clean) peels and rinds of all those "inedible" parts of veggies not being served up on the plate. I learned to keep them in a big Zip-lock in the freezer and, once a week, make a broth-base for cooking other soups, stews, etc.

    I've been enjoying the various takes on all the issues and events, though.

    But what an amazing personal period of serendipity! Scroll past the TMI/boring parts ...

    Because of shelved plans for relocation and opening a new shop, I thought I'd have to take drastic measures to stay afloat, like pulling off an impossible casino heist or getting clown b00bs and being some athlete's downfall.

    Instead, I went to Plan B and the grunt work of collecting debts from personal contracts and getting up close and personal with family estates. (Yuck, if you want to see a merely plain mob turn truly ugly on a dime, just throw one into the middle of my extended fam's latest funeral.)

    The family-wide tightening of belts and being creative about gift-sharing turned out to be a VERY good thing, given all the chaos (weather, travel, horrendous events in some destination locations). As bad as it's been, it's been horrendous everywhere else.

    Plus, this slower pace and drastically altered marketplace turned up exciting, unanticipated possibilities and applications for some of my designs. What I thought would be a miserable period of being house- and homebound in Scenic Undisclosed has (weirdly) turned out to be packed with thrills, but with all the comforts and cush of home.

    Can't say more due to trademark issues, but when I soft-launch later in the year I hope the TL gang will console me when a bunch of deployed gift baskets goes astray. ::COUGH::free schwag::COUGH::

    Take a few minutes to listen to some new music by a singer-songwriter friend of mine. I've been playing his new record in my car and it is really good. I forgot how much I like good acoustic guitar work.

    We were the only state without snow yesterday. Looks like I will have to wait for hurricane season to get a day off!

    that wasn't spoken for for Joshua, in time for his bday.  I will be feeding this one more carefully than I feed myself.  There are plenty of other birds out there available.  The breeders have become so good at breeding, huge amazing rare parrots are available all over the place, but Green Cheek Conures not so much.  They are small, they like to snuggle and become very attached to people, they aren't horribly noisy...mostly like to play and they aren't horribly messy either.  And they are like Gold out there in bird world.  They are so easy to get along with they seldom need to be rehomed too, which means if you are looking for one in your general vicinity....it may be challenging.

    It was called Team America- World Police. It was made by the South Park guys so it is quite juvenile but it's absolutely hilarious.

    Such a ban was in effect between 1994 and 2004 as part of a ban on assault weapons, which also expired. Since then, clips such as those allegedly used by suspect Jared Loughner, which contained more than 30 rounds, have been available for purchase without restriction.

    Where is the vaunted fact checking?  This is misleading.  The AWB banned the manufacture and importation of magazines with a capacity of greater than ten rounds other than for government purchase.  Magazines with greater than 10 round capacity were available for sale without restriction before, during, and after the 1994 to 2004 AWB.

    BTW, the M1 Garand rifle of WWII fame uses a clip.  Glocks all use magazines.

    What that belief actually means, who knows, but it's important to remember when people are marching around rallies holding firearms and talking about how Obama is destroying America.

    If the government in some far off future canceled all elections and were rounding up "inferior" persons and shipping them off to death camps, then one think that a substantial majority would approve violent opposition.

    The use of the word "never" in the question means that the differences in answers is in large part what each person considered to be the worst case government behavior in some undefined time frame.

    As an example, if in 1913 a person in Germany said that in under thirty years Germany will be losing a war against Britain, France, USA, and USSR while at the same time pulling Jews out of the army and killing them for being Jews, that person would have been considered a nut job.

    that it is a weird question but obviously it appeals more to Republicans than Democrats.  It's not like Democrats are any less aware of World War II than Republicans.  And as I said, it is all the more interesting in the context of secession threats and all the other rhetoric, as well as people toting guns around at rallies.

    By saying that you will NEVER rise up you are inviting oppression.

    There's a lot of talk on this site about the gradual (and sometimes not so gradual) disintegration of rights enjoyed by the US citizens (warrantless surveillance anyone?), I would hope that at some point every American would support armed rebellion- the issue in my mind is where to draw the line, not if it should be drawn.

    The risk of the masses marching on the capital with torches and pitchforks should always be in the back of the minds of those that mean to govern.

    most people are "working from home" but I had some things that I needed the office for.

    It was beautiful walking alone in the snow to work, it is seriously coming down.

    usually bikes to work.  To get to the T, he has to catch a bus not too far from his apt. in Cambridge.
