World Cup Live Blog: USA v. Algeria; England v. Slovenia

Goal by Donovan in stoppage time for USA saves our World Cup. 1-0 USA. USA wins Group C. England also qualifies.

These games will be played simultaneously but I will try and keep up with both.

First news - the USA starting lineup:

Goalkeeper: Tim Howard. Defenders: Steve Cherundolo, Jay DeMerit, Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Bornstein (in for Gooch). Midfielders: Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu (gets the start after fine performance as sub vs. Slovenia), Clint Dempsey. Forwards: Herculez Gomez (in for suspended Findley), Jozy Altidore.

Bornstein??? Gooch must be hurt. Gooch at 80% is better than Bornstein at 200%. Anyway, live blog on the flip.

GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!

England sits Heskey. Starts Dafoe. Milner is back on.

I've got both games on.

Kick off in England-Slovenia and USA-Algeria.

5 minutes - Uneventful first 5 minutes in both games.

6 minute - Algeria should have scored off a mistake by Demerit. Hit the post. Gomez comes right back with a good shot. Corner for USA.

9th minute - USA defense looks amateurishly awful.

10th minute - USA looks awful in the back. Slovenia is holding its own against England.

15th minute - USA looks awful. Slovenia looks better than England to me.

20th minute - Great chance for USA. Donovan can't beat the keeper. Dempsey was offside imo.

England scores. Dafoe. Now the USA has to win.

30th minute - England looks like they will win. The USA has to find a goal somehow. The USA defense looks terrible on a consistent basis.

35th minute- Nice play for a good chance for Dempsey. Frankly he failed to make a good shot of it.

Altidore misses an open net.

40th minute- USA defense has been better. Chances have been squandered.

HALFTIME - As the results stand - USA is out. Harkes is an awful commentator and I don't like the Englishman much either. Tough listen.

England looks solid now. USA does not.

Results have been fair imo.

After watching the replay, Dempsey clearly was onside and that should have been a goal.

2nd Half England-Slovenia - Dafoe misses a good chance in the opening minute.

USA-Slovenia Feilhaber on but I don't know who came off.

55th minute - Dempsey misses two easy chances. Catches the bar in the first one. Misses on the easy rebound.

69th minute - Looks unpromising. Algeria has decided not to play.

Buddle on for Edu. We need a break.

67th minute - header from Buddle stopped. Algeria counter misses.

70th minute - Need something.

73rd minute - Donovan cross disappointing.

75th minute - Desperation time.

78th minute - Nice strike by Bradley but not followup for the rebound.

80th minute - Even more desperate now.

85th minute - need a bolt of lightning.

88th minute - Need a miracle.

FINAL - 1-0. USA wins the group.

I would much prefer Goodson in for Gooch, leaving Boca out on the left.  I know the Hondurans love Bornstein - maybe they could have him?

Nice to see Gomez get the start, tho'.

as I am not going to give up my spot in the cafe in the town square on one of the first sunny days in several here, and one of my last days in Italy, to go around the corner with the spouse to sit in the sports bar with the crowd -- many of them our American students - watching tghe World Cup.

I don't have to do so (and I can't get a good connection to the streaming, amid the mountains), as the collective groans have been loud enough to convey a general sense of the game.  So there have been a lot of groans.

But reading through the live blog and comments, I get the details now.

Ohhhhh, lots of noise around the corner.  I think that those ar enot groans but cheers?!

I think removing it would penalize athleticism and skill by allowing the offense to just hang forward rather than having to sprint past and beat their defender.  It's a hard one to call, I'll give you that.  But based on the reffing so far, so is a handball, and I don't think we should change that rule either...
