    reinforces how racist this attack is....

    If it were only about illegal immigration, there would be no concern about English.  That concern is a cultural concern that there are too many brown people who speak Spanish, whether or not they are here illegally.

    favors an open border with Mexico? How about allowing any Haitians who want to come here to work be allowed to enter the country? Filipinos? The Thai?

    Do you think there should be an affirmative action program for Americans who don't speak English if their unemployment numbers stay higher than the national average over the coming decade?

    borders have lost significance over time. Let's look for a mutual future, not to some 19th or 18th, or even early 20th Century definition of State or Country. Boundaries have been in flux since the creation of the USA, why not the significance of them?

    I say we roll with it, let freedom ring.  It's a fantasy to think we can close borders like faucets anyway, lets face and deal with reality.

    Can't say I support your affirmitive action employment proposal for non-English speakers,  I'm simply for a fair shot in a square game.  That being said we would all be better served getting on the bilingual train, knowledge is a good thing...this fear of the espanol is ridiculous.

    whose grasp of the English language was and is execrable, while my wife, who was born in the Philippines, has an excellent command of the language after living here for 18 years and sees many mistakes in written and spoken English made by her co-workers at work, most of whom, yes, were born here.

    So, in answer to your question, yes, even if it affects the employment of native-born Americans adversely.

    If Republicans get their way on economic matters, I would worry more whether China keeps an open border for American job seekers "over the coming decade", instead of getting agitated about border issues with Mexico :-)
    Hopefully Democrats will be able to keep Republicans away from the controls....

    There was a reason that Nixon went to China: and, there was a reason that trade climbed with the Bush I presidency.  Say goodbye to controls on safety and controls on worker protection and controls on any kind of outsourcing with China with a Republican majority.  (I guess we will all gripe about it then.)

    isn't in English? Frankly, centuries long Hispanic history and influence is one of the few things that makes otherwise often quite god-forsaken parts of the Southwest interesting.

    Of course, without legalized sin, nuclear testing and military spending there wouldn't be much reason for anybody, of any nationality, to spend time in Nevada.

    And without its long history of cheap, cheap often illegal labor there wouldn't be anywhere near as many retirees who could afford retiring to Arizona.
