Another Plane Crash in the Hudson River, Coverage Begins

A small plane and helicopter collided today above the Hudson River. Both went down. The massive media coverage begins, Mediaite says look to Twitter for eye witness accounts and pics.

What I'm seeing on Twitter: 8 dead, including 1 child. Mayor Bloomberg says effort has changed from rescue to recovery. ("Pilot plus 2 others incl child in small aircraft; 6 Italian tourists + pilot in helicopter.")[More...]

A news report:

The plane, a Piper PA-32, took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, and the helicopter was a Eurocopter AS 350 owned by Liberty Tours, a sightseeing and charter company, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The plane was headed to Ocean City, N.J., with three people aboard, FAA spokesman Jim Peters said. The helicopter had just taken off from a heliport on Manhattan's West side and it was believed to be carrying five passengers and one crew member, he said.

helicopters in NYC are prone to problems.  Or is it just the publicity?

Probably there shouldn't be nearly so many helicopters buzzing around Manhattan. On the other hand, there are probably many more unreported fatal car crashes in the region.

    and thought "Not another helicopter!".

Small planes usually crash due to operator error or mechanical problems.  Helicopters tend to crash because they are helicopters - inherently unstable aircraft.

and I was thinking between Newark airport, Teterboro and the helicopters, it did seem very crowded. I thought it looked unsafe, although I was remembering a helicopter ride I went on over the Hudson a couple of years ago. I was thinking I should take my daughter out someday. That makes me feel creeped out now.
