The Cubbies aren't usually this bad until August. On the upside, I won't have my hopes and dreams shattered in a couple of months. My dreams for this year died weeks ago.

Pro athletes and retirement (none / 0) (#15)
by caseyOR on Sun Jun 07, 2009 at 08:00:19 PM EST
A year or so ago, I read a story about Drew Bledsoe, who was the QB for the Patriots until he was injured and Tom Brady took over. Then he went to the Cowboys, only to be displaced by Tony Romo. After that he retired.

Unlike most athletes, though, Bledsoe planned his retirement, the whole thing, not just the date. He lives in central Oregon. Prior to leaving football, Drew bought a house, settled his family, started a business. He had a post-football life up and running before he retired from the game. And he committed to that new life.

Drew talked about how critical it was for him to have already started his new career before leaving the game. He talked about how shocking it is for an athlete, who has probably been playing his sport since he was 8 years old and completely defining himself by that sport, to lose that identity.

Maybe Brett should give Bledsoe a call. It can't hurt.

North Korea convicts two U.S. journalists (none / 0) (#32)

Laura Ling and Euna Lee have been convicted by the high court of North Korea. The women were sentenced to 12 years in prison. The North Korean government also announced that any sanctions against North Korea would be treated as acts of war and harsh measures would be taken.

It is unclear if the journalists were really in North Korean territory when they were arrested or if North Korean military crossed into China and grabbed them. They have been held since March 17 of this year.

Supreme Court rejects DADT challenge (none / 0) (#34)

The Supreme Court on Monday turned down a challenge to the Pentagon policy forbidding gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military, granting an Obama administration request to maintain the Clinton-era "don't ask, don't tell" directive.

The court said it will not hear an appeal from former Army Capt. James Pietrangelo II, who was dismissed under the military's policy.

The federal appeals court in Boston earlier threw out a lawsuit filed by Pietrangelo and 11 other veterans. He was the only member of that group who asked the high court to rule that the policy is unconstitutional. In 1993, President Bill Clinton established the policy as a compromise after strong resistance from the military and Congress toward allowing gays to serve openly in the armed forces.

In court papers, the administration said the appeals court ruled correctly in this case when it found that "don't ask, don't tell" is "rationally related to the government's legitimate interest in military discipline and cohesion."
