Belmont Stakes: Borel Goes For Jockey Triple Crown

Seeking an unprecedented jockey triple crown (on different horses), Calvin Borel will be back on Mine That Bird, the Kentucky Derby winner, as the connections to Preakness winning filly Rachel Alexandra decided to not run her in the Belmont.

Andrew Beyer's take - he likes Dunkirk, arguing that Mine That Bird's come from behind/Silky Sullivan style is not favored by the Belmont Park track. We shall see.

UPDATE - Summer Bird wins. Mine That Bird and Borel finish third.

    I'm curious why he says that...since the Belmont (5.00 / 1) (#2)
by steviez314 on Sat Jun 06, 2009 at 01:55:56 PM EST
is the longest distance of the 3, I would have assumed that come-from-behind would be fine.

If the Preakness was one more furlong longer, Mine That Bird might have won it.

It does seem to defy common sense... (none / 0) (#8)

but Belmont winners most often are pressers coming right off the pace...some say its because of the sandy consistency of the Belmont Track, like running on the beach, its harder to close ground.

I like Charitable Man, got my 20 WPS in.

friend of mine suggested (before we knew Rachel Alexandra was out) that even though the length of the race would suggest a come from behind winner would do best, the nature of the turns means that if you can get out from the pack early, you could be good for the distance.  Which is her style.

My completely uneducated guess?  Mine That Bird and Dunkirk will be tired.  So I'll pick Summer Bird.  Seriously though, I don't know really what I'm talking about...

my horses normally never do well...always last in the family's circle of champions!  But I had a feeling that somebody could come out of nowhere on this one.  They usually do!  My racing advice will forever be crap, nonetheless.

anytime I made a real big score at the track it was playing numbers or I liked the horse's name...when I try to handicap I lose like yesterday, or hit a small winner.

    Nice call burro.

who lives a few hundred yards away from the Belmont raceway.  One of the few people in the world who is thrilled out of his mind whenever no one has a shot at the Triple Crown!

Of course Borel has a chance to make history but no one actually cares about that, it seems.

Lost Triple Crown possibilty (none / 0) (#5)
by Saul on Sat Jun 06, 2009 at 03:22:39 PM EST
since Borel  did not ride Mine That Bird in the Preakness.  Mine that bird came in second and might have won it had Borel rode him.

So if Borel wins today then a Triple Crown possibility was truly lost.

Why Borel rode another horse in the Preakness must have been for money

Not since 1978 has there been a Triple Crown Winner as far as horses are concerned.

I live in Texas and the famous horse Assault from the King Ranch here in Texas won the triple crown in 1946

Borel had always said if Rachel A. was available to ride, he would ride her...wasn't necessarily about the money.  At least on the surface.

    Borel had ridden RA for 5 straight wins in 2009. (5.00 / 2) (#9)
by steviez314 on Sat Jun 06, 2009 at 05:01:13 PM EST
He had a longer history with her than Mine That Bird, and actually thinks she's the best horse he's ever ridden.

It's not really surprising that he rode her in the Preakness.

Sport's highlights,  from a total, rank amateur:

    # 4.  1958,  Johnnie Unitas & the Colts beat my NY Giants in "The Greatest Game ever played."

    #3.  1963,  Broadway Joe gets revenge.....Super Bowl 3.

    # 2.  1963, I win baseball scholarship; Mickey hits one 734 ft. off Stadium façade.

    And  #1...........Drum roll please:

    # 1.  1973, Secretariat runs away with The Belmont

    1.  Bucky Dent's HR at Fenway in 1978 (and I was in school in Boston, so was doubly sweet).

    2.  Miracle on Ice 1980.

    3.  Rangers win the Cup 1994.  I'm only sorry my dad missed it by one year.

Three of my all time favorites:

    1. Broken bat walk off single by Luis Gonzalez in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series to win the Championship for the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Yankees.

    2. Boston RedSox winning four straight from the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS after trailing 3 games to none.

    3. Josh Beckett pitching a complete game shutout over the Yankees on short rest in Game 6 at Yankee Stadium to win the World Series for "my" Florida Marlins in 2003.

Had Dunkirk as well (none / 0) (#19)
by KoolJeffrey on Sun Jun 07, 2009 at 12:08:11 PM EST
I didn't see this post until today, but my money was on Dunkirk all the way. He looked like he had it wire to wire, then fought back after falling behind in the stretch, but just too much pressure from Mine That Bird and Summer Bird. Mine That Bird pressed hard against Summer Bird, who then got squeezed into Dunkirk. Really a great race, and I'm not a huge racing fan.
