Friday Afternoon Open Thread

A bevy of beauty queens got together yesterday to express their beliefs. Present and former winners of Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, Miss Universe, and Miss California titles recorded a PSA that included these memorable lines:

"I believe when I express my opinion I have a responsibility to do it in a way that respects others who may not agree … I believe in love … I believe when two people with opposite views communicate with love and respect both points of view can be heard … I believe no one should be silenced if they are speaking from their heart with respect … I believe in the beauty of California."

Carrie Prejean couldn't make it, but we already know what she believes. What do you believe?

This is an open thread.

"We stand for broccoli. For Pilates. And dental floss. We believe in the treadmill and its siblings," one of the print ads reports. "... We stand for seat belts and stopping HIV. And we believe fruit makes a wonderful dessert."
You stand for seat belts? Huh?! And for dental floss and stopping HIV? Why, how courageous of you.

You all remember that trial in Libby, MT of the US v. WR GRace, et als., in which the criminality of their handling and disposing of asbestos (I never really got the gist of the government's case) was in issue.

The jury returned its verdict today:  not guilty as to all defendants and all counts.

This was another of the cases in which the DoJ had real difficulties in complying with Brady and Giglio - once is a mistake, twice is a problem, but this many times tells me it was a policy.  Well, the judge laid into them before the jury, and the jury acquitted.

"There once was a lady from Sparta
    Who was a phenomenal farter.
    She could fart anything
    From God Save the King
    To Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

She would fart a gavotte for a starter
Then a bit of the Christmas Cantata.

I know you are shocked.  From Think Progress:

Earlier this week, Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Jeff Sessions (R-AL) made headlines when he said he was open to a gay Supreme Court nominee. "I don't think a person who acknowledges that they have gay tendencies is disqualified per se for the job," he said. Yesterday on Fox News, Sessions initially sounded accepting of a gay nominee, saying, "Republicans do not believe in identity politics." But he immediately qualified his statement, adding that a gay nominee would be a "big concern":

Q: On the question of a gay nominee, one person is noted as saying that he believes it is a bridge too far to have a gay nominee.

SESSIONS: Well, I think that would be a big concern that the American people might feel -- might feel uneasy about that. It is a matter for the president to decide.

    Who'd-a thunk it?

It is the true believers who take themselves very seriously that are a danger.

Since we are on beliefs, I believe the SF Giants will win the World Series and the 49'ers will win the Super Bowl.

I also believe that NYC has some of the best restaurants in the world and the best subway system, although it needs a little more technology - like monitors that announce when the next train will be coming.

Obama to visit Germany and France next month.

He is expected to visit Berlin, Dresden and the former concentration camp in the Buchenwald area, the one his great uncle (IIRC) helped liberate, then travel on to France to take part in the 65th anniversary commemorations of D-Day.

Interestingly enough, German radio (the one I listen to is in Leipzig) has been spending a lot of time this year on the 20th anniversary of "Die Wende" (the Turn) a/k/a "Die Friedliche Revolution von 1989" (the Peaceful Revolution of 1989).

This weekend marks the anniversary of an important triggering event in that - a stolen municipal election in Leipzig.  TPTB back then went further than stuffing the ballot boxes - it came out, that Berlin had sent the local authorities a document telling them what the results would be, about a week before the election.

There had been a bunch of (their equivalent of) DFH Bloggers who'd been fed up with the candidates the machine had put up and had elected with 97.22 (or whatever) percentage of the vote and had actually gone to the trouble of reading the election law and challenging various parts of it.

When the fraud was revealed, it "tore the facade off" the then-existing system and led, pretty directly, to the summer of Germans going on a Hungarian vacation and slipping across into Austria, or holing up in embassies in Prague, and then the Monday demonstrations in August-September, which led to the Wall coming down in the Fall.

Just a reminder about stealing elections, Repugs.  It can have unintended consequences.

Well, well, well the Ed show had Lawrence O'Donnell hosting. He has an understanding all the while drilling deep and heavy. Very comparable to the infamous Chris Mathews. O'Donnell knows he is right and shows it, the more Cheney and friends defend torture they look as the Constitution defines "Cruel and Unusual". Ladies and gentleman if we treated animals like dogs and cats or horses like these descriptions perpetuated, the human owners highly and likely would go to jail or at least be convicted and fined. In some states is it not a felony to treat animals like this stuff of torture...

These guys who say torture will get you every where and then turn one hundred and eighty degrees and say it is bad but we should not do it, Is funny. This is what makes American culture a dark mystery as those evil as anyone of that axis of evil Bush talked about, his legacy. Sheesh
