April (Was)The Cruellest Month (So Far in 2009)

The promised troop withdrawal and the distraction of a sucky economy should not prevent us from pausing to remember that members of our military continue to die in Iraq.

Two American Marines and a sailor were killed during a military operation in Anbar ... on Thursday “while conducting combat operations against enemy forces,” the [military command] statement said. ... The deaths brought the total for American troops in April to 18, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, making it the deadliest month for American forces in Iraq since September.

Total U.S. military deaths to date: 4,281 according to the Coalition Casualty Count.

And it's not going to change any time soon.  We will be there indefinitely, no matter what the talking heads tell us. Obama will leave 50,000 troops in Iraq past the August 31, 2010 deadline, but as Robert Gates said on Meet the Press on March 1, 2009:

ROBERT GATES: They do have a very different mission, but that mission will be principally a training assistance advisory role. There will be a limited counterterrorism operations aspect to it, and we will still have some soldiers embedded with Iraqi units as part of the training effort. But it's a very different kind of arrangement, and our soldiers will be consolidated into a limited number of bases in order to provide protection for themselves and for civilians who are out working in the Iraqi neighborhoods and countryside, as well. They will be called "advisory and assistance brigades." They won't be called "combat brigades."

And now, we have the Af-Pak Strategy, whereby we are stepping up military action in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Noted historian and Middle East expert,Juan Cole, a harsh critic of the Bush administration, thinks that Obama has presented us with a 21st Century version of the "domino-theory", where he says:

Obama described the same sort of domino effect that Washington elites used to ascribe to international communism. In the updated, al-Qaida version, the Taliban might take Kunar Province, and then all of Afghanistan, and might again host al-Qaida, and might then threaten the shores of the United States. He even managed to add an analog to Cambodia to the scenario, saying, "The future of Afghanistan is inextricably linked to the future of its neighbor, Pakistan," and warned, "Make no mistake: Al-Qaida and its extremist allies are a cancer that risks killing Pakistan from within."

Long and short - there will be many more casualties to come.  Unfortunately.

I seem to recall the training part of the Iraq military was very much in the mission right after "Mission Accomplished"...the recruiting of Iraqi's into their military, the arming of their new military, the attacks on the new military, etc. were the theme of the MSM information on the invasion for a good while. Why would our military have stopped recruiting and training Iraqi's to take over?

It's just so hard to find the logic that says there's truth in what our gov't tells us anymore.

And they had FOX News on.  I've never watched FOX before, except when passing through while channel surfing.  My ipod was dead, so I had to listen to that drivel for an hour. But when Glenn Beck asked his audience of partisans, "Do you trust your government?" I was sad to say I agreed with the audience.  I haven't trusted my government in a long time.

disengenuous demagogue only started asking questions like that in November.

Before then he was all about "We dont have enough missles to conduct MY kind of foreign policy" and "Let the wild fires burn, cuz those Californians aren't REAL Americans." etc etc

two marines and a sailor killed in Anbar province..."while conducting combat operations against enemy forces", the military command statement said.  May l, 2003--"major combat operations in Iraq have ended.",  President George W. Bush, from the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln.   A tragic anniversary.

I feel such contempt for our government that I can hardly express it.

We, the people, have voted to get the hell out of Iraq.
We went in there for Bush's father. The son sacrificed us all as kings do. He used us as pawns.

    OK. We know that.

But we had expressed a mandate in 2006. We elected a democratic congress to get us out of Iraq.

Then we had to elect Obama - a phony if there ever was one - to get us out of Iraq.

We are nowhere near ending this blot on the American countenance.

The left is almost finished rejoicing in having elected, as Chris Bowers of OpenLeft so sweetly referred to Obama, the "black guy". Hip Hip Hooray.

But we are still in Iraq up to our eyeballs.
And our soldiers are continuing to kill and be killed.
    Still for nothing.

And this is no longer even talked about.
    Thankfully, TChris has mentioned it.
    But the left is asleep.
    Our moral conscience is asleep.

    To hell with our economy.
    To hell with torture.
    End this horrible war.

phony about what the President said on the campaign trail..

''we have to be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless going in''

He repeated that line a thousand times, and he is doing exactly what he said.
He established a firm timeline for withdrawal of combat troops,Sept,2010, and a firm deadline for all troops,Dec 31,2011.

That is what America voted for, and that is what they are getting.
As the father of a recently returned combat soldier from Iraq, I mourn the loss of each of our brave soldiers and marines and feel horrible for their loved ones.
