Chris Brown, who "finished 2008 as the fourth-best-selling artist in the digital realm," and his girlfriend Rihanna, whose song "Disturbia" was the "sixth best-selling digital track of the year," canceled their performances at yesterday's Grammy awards. Brown's absence can be explained by his rather more pressing appointment with LAPD where, accompanied by his attorney, Mark Geragos, he surrendered for booking before posting $50,000 bail.

Brown is suspected of threatening and battering Rhianna. According to this story, Rhianna suffered visible injuries.

    And so demonstrative of the fact that this kind of violence happens to women across the spectrum: young and old, rich and poor, black and white, famous and anonymous. Nobody is exempt.

    I only hope this doesn't have a lasting impact on her long-term well-being and sense of self. Best to Rhianna.

    is that supposed to mean.  I just meant to point out that domestic abuse is not only directed toward women.  Trust me, I know.

    I'm sure it would be lovely for her to hear some of that right now. Eric, I'm sorry if you, or a man close to you, have also suffered domestic abuse.

    I do empathize.  The good news is that, if he did do what he is alleged to have done, at least they aren't married.  If he is abusive, then that won't change and she needs to leave.

    women are killed by their abusers after they leave them. Thus complicating the seemingly commonsense recommendation to "just leave". Perhaps that statistic has changed since I last researched it - at least I hope so.
