Leaked Memo: Guantanamo Detainees May Move To Illinois

Conservative Andrew Breitbart has launched a series of new sites called Big Government. Today, the site published this leaked memo which suggests that President Obama is going to order the detainees at Guantanamo to be moved to the Thomson Correctional Facility in Illinois.

Key portions are below:

SUBJECT: Directing Certain Actions with Respect to Acquisition and Use of Thomson Correctional Center

.... 1. The Secretary of Defense shall relocate detainees currently held at the Guantanamo Detention Facility to the TCC as expeditiously as possible, to the extent permitted by laws related to Guantanamo detainees, and consistent with
the findings in, and interagency Review established by, Executive Order 13492 of January 22, 2009.

2. The Attorney General shall as expeditiously as possible acquire and activate the TCC as a United States Penitentiary, which the Attorney General has determined would alleviate the Bureau of Prisons' shortage of maximum security cell space and could be used for other appropriate purposes. The Attorney General shall also provide to the Department of Defense a sufficient
portion of the TCC to serve as a detention facility to be operated by the Department of Defense, to accommodate the relocation of detainees by the Secretary of Defense in accordance with paragraph 1 of this memorandum.

...The Secretary of Defense is authorized and directed to publish this memorandum in the Federal Register.

Sen. Dick Durbin says the leaked memo is an encouraging sign. Background is here and here.

There we go away around the pathetic NIMBYism that was being shown- go somewhere the president might be more popular than the state's delegation. It was getting old hearing people who were pushing for the close of GITMO turn yellow when it actually became possible assuming there state would take some internees.

Was hoping for an open thread but what the hell, I will post it anyways.

Just found out my deaf daughter was accepted to Purdue University next fall.

I could not be more proud and thanks for allowing me to share.

congratulations for me to her. (none / 0) (#3)

What kind of students with disabilities service does Purdue have? I've worked at two places that were very proactive, and another that's a lawsuit waiting to happen, either ADA or civil rights.

Thank you and thank you for the question.

For the hearing impaired Purdue is exceptional.

And interesting to me is how Indiana University is far less well equipped. Out of ~30,000 students something like 12, that's right 12, are hearing impaired. And only 1 or 2 with cochlear implants (like my daughter).

My wife knows the details far better than I but Purdue has note taking systems or something of the like that will help tremendously.

Good for Purdue and good for my daughter.

    over the moon!

It's such an exciting time, it's like a door opens and the world is suddenly there, so much bigger than you ever imagined - and while you know in your heart that she is ready to spread her wings and fly, and your heart is full-to-bursting with pride, it's so, so hard not to feel that pang of knowing you have to let go a little more.

Enjoy every moment of this milestone - and thanks for letting us share your joy!

It really did overwhelm us. She went deaf in the first grade. And to me, she just made one hell of an accomplishment.

And she is not planning on engineering. More likely something in the medical field.

And I might add. This has fueled my passion in the health care debate. When it became apparent that the cochlear implant was needed our insurer refused to pay for it. And afterwards we had much difficulty finding an insurer who would accept us.

We are very happy. Especially her 75 year old grandma who never went to college.

Thank you for your kind words. All of you.

TCC is way too big, will cost way too much and the staffing will be more than necessary for the few detainees they need to house.

I could have been convinced it was money well spent if they had been ordered to acquire the property and ready it for a homeless shelter to help some of the people evicted from their homes by the recent economic decisions.

its beyond funny hearing you on this issue-- "Obama's not closing Gitmo" Obama proposes various sites-- then the state's congressional delegations object, Obama finally finds a state where the entire delegation both Dem and Rep doesn't go nuts and he's "out of touch and self-absorbed"

Look, I thought Hardin was the ideal site but I have a feeling that if he'd chosen Montana we'd hear people like you talking about "Siberia" and "Gulags" because Obama decided to send detainee's to the Mountain West.

you are useless trying to predict what others think. Look, you bot the koolaid, don't let it stain your tongue.

You put quotes on a statement, but I can't find that statement in any comments or in the post itself.
