CNN : Obama Wins North Carolina

CNN calls North Carolina for Obama as soon as the polls closed. I'm still following Indiana, as i think that's the more important state for Hillary Clinton, but I'll post results here. You can keep each other updated in comments.

BTD will do a separate thread with new exit poll data from N.C.

What does an immediate call (none / 0) (#1)
by magster on Tue May 06, 2008 at 06:31:54 PM EST
    mean for margin of victory?

I think the calls are as political as everything.. (5.00 / 1) (#7)
by reynwrap582 on Tue May 06, 2008 at 06:33:12 PM EST
else...  Clinton is clearly going to win IN but they're just gonna sit out on calling it because it reduces the impact of the win.  Call me paranoid or whatever, but I knew exactly this was going to happen.  I bet Obama's margin in NC will be smaller than Hillary's in IN.

exit polls for NC show Obama wins by around 14% (none / 0) (#3)

for Obama but not a single vote tally.

    Somehow (none / 0) (#8)
by AnninCA on Tue May 06, 2008 at 06:33:20 PM EST
NC has ended up in play because she got close, I guess.

CNN is saying she has to get out of the race because he's "obviously" winning in NC.

    Wow.....we expected her to win?

    spin spin spin (none / 0) (#12)
by angie on Tue May 06, 2008 at 06:35:34 PM EST
He was supposed to win by 20 or some such bs -- now if she loses by a smaller than expected margin she needs to get out -- IN is no longer the tie-breaker it seems.

    Not really (none / 0) (#14)
by americanincanada on Tue May 06, 2008 at 06:36:21 PM EST
it implies they think he will win huge based on AA vote alone. It could be much tighter. They did not even wait for any hard numbers in NC.

They are going on exit poll data alone.

How can you call NC for Obama when the polls (none / 0) (#18)
by stefystef on Tue May 06, 2008 at 06:39:27 PM EST
just close at 7:30, about 8 minutes ago, but IN is still up in the air and those polls closed over a half hour ago.

Because the exit polls (none / 0) (#30)
by gyrfalcon on Tue May 06, 2008 at 07:13:41 PM EST
show such an overwhelming advantage for Obama that they'd have to be massively, massively off for her to have won.  They've learned their lesson that they have to be careful about calling things solely on the basis of exit polling, but the NC results are apparently so strong for Obama that there's no chance he hasn't won.

They also take into consideration what numbers they can get about turnout in key demographic areas.  If turnout in AA areas was very low, or rural so high, they'd adjust accordingly.  Etc.  They take all that stuff into account.

But Didn't obama Say IN Was The Tiebreaker? (none / 0) (#20)

What does this mean in the big scheme of things?

    It means (none / 0) (#24)
by Faust on Tue May 06, 2008 at 06:42:49 PM EST
that if he loses Indianna then Clinton people will hit him upside the head with the tiebreaker comment until the next primary.

Pretty stupid thing for him to say.

    Parent

    Well, sort of (none / 0) (#26)
by AnninCA on Tue May 06, 2008 at 06:49:48 PM EST
but the problem is that she also said NC was a changer.

So when we have two narratives going....his with "I've survived Wright, obviously....look at NC."  and her narrative, "Indiana was the true test."

I personally think he wins again on the PR front.

That's why BTD has felt he's got a better chance against McCain.  (I disagree with that, fwiw)
