California chose 241 delegates to the DNC today, in accordance with the Feb. 5 primary results.

Hillary: 134 delegates
Obama: 105

There are also superdelegates and others:

The delegates at stake in caucuses Sunday represent only a portion of those who will attend the convention from California. Others will include 71 superdelegates, who range from members of Congress to former party leaders, and another group of 129 delegates who will be chosen next month, based on the statewide primary vote tally.

Obama, who had previously scrubbed 900 of his delegates (background here) restored them when faced with an outcry from his supporters.

Most of the cuts—about 900 names—were made by Obama. Clinton's campaign dropped about 50 names from its list of prospective delegates. The names were culled without explanation from the campaign or the state party, leading to a guessing game over why some people were ousted.

Facing a backlash from supporters, Obama's campaign reversed course Thursday and reinstated the names to the ballots. Campaign manager David Plouffe said in a letter to potential delegates, "We are confident that delegates elected from this pool will reflect the senator's commitment to a diverse and unified delegation at the national convention."

But I'd be surprised if that many delegates were ever culled at one time before.

when faced with an "outcry" or "backlash." Wonder what he'd do when faced with Republicans in Congress digging in their heels? Or, in negotiating with big Pharma?

is not to be taken to indicate I thought Obama was culling delegates for other than nepotistic reasons.

There were about 1,000 voters who lined up to cast a ballot here on Telegraph Avenue. (Among them Professor George Lakoff).

Everything went as or more smoothly as we could have hoped. (I was the volunteer who worked the line and answered questions and directed traffic.)

There will be four Barack Obama delegates out of CA-09...plus we voted for one alternate as well.

There was very little mention made of the list and the culling then reinstatement of all the delegate candidates. It was a non-issue as far as I could tell. Since there were 87 candidates and only five possible delegates everyone knew they were facing a long shot.

The remarkable observations would be the enormous diversity of those present (in Oakland that is a given, though.) The sheer number of electeds and activists I recognized. And just how many people moved through the process quickly and efficiently.

There were, to my eyes, a surprisingly large number of voters who reregistered as Democrats to participate. You didn't have to register as a Democrat to vote for Obama in the primary in CA, but you do have to be a registered Democrat to vote in the delegate caucus to select delegates to go to Denver.

This being Oakland it was mostly Decline to State and Greens who reregistered...with a small smattering of Republicans. My take was that authentic Obama support was very high.

That's too bad because I bet you would have a lot to contribute to the party platform. The convention is not just about picking the candidate. Are you at least coming to Denver for it?

both candidates are afraid of "stealth delegates" (think stealth jurors in high profile cases, those that lie to get on the jury so they can write a book or get their 15 minutes) -- and CA rules seem to allow them to do these challenges. It is interesting however that Hillary wanted to scrub 20 while Obama wanted to scrub 900. Sounds to me like his campaign failed to do their homework and wanted more time to check them out. Either that, or as one report (see my background link above) suggested, he intended to replace them with his campaign "bundlers and their girlfriends."

As far as I can tell, Obama's gaffe, was an attempt, to communicate to the SF people the Edwards theme. Edwards, was able to communicate that message without belittling the people he talked about. What is the difference?

is compassion about seeing issues as moral imperatives and going all out to fix them. If we don't try we will never get it right. That's my issue with Obama and his health care plans. He thinks about doing the political feasible, that which requires expending the least amount of political capital not doing what is morally right.
