Thanksgiving Day Radio Thanks

I just turned on KBCO in Boulder. Like many great radio stations around the country, they are playing collectibles with fewer commercials today.

Playing now: The Rolling Stones, You Can't Always Get What You Want.

Which of your favorite songs did you hear on the radio today? (I'll get some great late night suggestions from them.)

What I'm thankful for right now: The thieves left my stereo (probably because it dates to 1978 and the amp weighs about 80 pounds.) As you look around today, what are you happy you resisted the urge to trade in or give away?

I'm glad that I've never upgraded from Vera's old cut glass serving bowls.  Some she gave to me before she passed, a couple came after.  Nothing special except many memories of her in them.

enough to be thwie parent, I opened the windows today and listened to nature-- the breeze, birds, and even crickets.

No traffic, no trains, no sirens... I got to hear those sounds of nature, like my son playing and his dog barking at him.

I didn't even know how stressed I was until I started to relax!

Of course, I had been up since 4 a.m. cooking... and it all turned out well.

The sounds of the country, in the city. What a blessing on Thanksgiving!

I use a 6 years old laptop; I use it in a class I teach that needs a special application not available on standard equipment. The laptop is probably worth $50, but is fully functional, wireless, etc.

I have another 7 years old desktop, wireless as well with a USB for it, that is in the guest room so overnight guests can check the email, read the unreal paper, etc.

I quite old myself, but my wife hasn't traded me in yet. Thanks giving.

I still have an old Rhodes Mark IV piano downstairs. Jazz may be all we have left this time next year.  I'll drink to Ray Charles and Thelonius Monk today.  Namaste.

It is one of the musical ones that just brings a smile to my face when I open it. It has the turkeys lined up and plays "Another one bites the dust" by Queen. So today this is my favorite song. Hugs to my brother as he has always been my rock. I am SOOOOOOOOOO thankful I was lucky to get such a fantastic sibling. Happy Thanksgiving Day to all.PS, turkey in the oven and will be ready in 45 minutes. Yep, another one bites the dust!

    "The Fever" (none / 0) (#6)

I'm listening to WMMR, the station I listened to as a teenager.  Rarely listen to it anymore since it's changed a lot, but on Thanksgiving it seems just like it used to be, and some of the DJs are still the same.

They just said they're going to play (a concert I think) Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes :) which reminded me of "The Fever".  Great music.  Most of the time I prefer Bruce's version, but it's hard to choose.

Look what I found on YouTube.  Ha.  A version with both of them.  It's not the best musically, but nostalgic:
    YouTube "The Fever"

Those were the days when Bruce would show up on stage at concerts, and sometimes at nightclubs in Asbury Park.  Those were my college days (about 20 miles from Asbury Park).  I've seen Bruce in concert many times, in different venues from medium to very large.  I've only seen Southside Johnny once, in a high school gymnasium.  Brings back the memories.

    Hope you enjoy it.

you're into vintage audio too. Neat!  Nothing nowadays compares to the warm stereo sound of the 1970s. What amp and speakers do you have? They could be worth $$$ to collectors.

My husband just made Xmas shopping for him a snap.  I don't know much about iPods and tech stuff so didn't realize that his iPod is OLD.  He uses it all the time.  It backs up the threat identification class he teaches in case the computers on post are down and it has happened.  I had no idea it was getting "old".  He's getting old too, he has stopped complaining about things like he used to but tonight he said something about his iPod being too old to be compatible with the new computer sytem upgrades at work.  Was looking around the the net and ran into ZUNE which has some attractive features like the wireless thing and a bigger screen (what guy doesn't want the biggest screen he can get?)  Would really appreciate hearing from people who have some experience using ZUNE and anyone who can give me a comparison.....thanks.....sweet dreams....Happy Thanksgiving.

the Zune will be incompatible with his current library in iTunes.

Your best bet to avoid headaches is to get another iPod. They can be had for a song these days. Check Apple's refurb store.

He has a large music collection on his iPod.  How the conversation started that led me to finding out his iPod is too old was me pointing out an iPod speaker.  A cheap one that was in some ad, but I was trying to feel him out because I wanted to get him that Bose one.  He is indoors, outdoors, and has always eyed some of the newer outdoor speakers.  Seemed that the Bose could do it all, very portable.  He said that his iPod wasn't compatible with most of the new speakers though.....and then began talking about the work situation that developed this past week when they upgraded.

Should I buy today or wait?  I can't tell.  I sent him his iPod for Xmas of 2002.  Sent it to him in Iraq, trying to cheer him up cuz things were sort of starting to suck a bit then and his unit was responsible for the Fallujah area among other things and boy did that work.  I couldn't have found anything better then to put a smile on his face.  I paid $400 for it then :)

160G for $250. (Yup, that's right--Apple did a downgrade this year). The extra space can come in handy if you've got lots of video. Ask him how big his music library is before you buy (easy to tell from iTunes).

One thing I can say about buying something for him, if it adds quality to his life and it's dependable he'll use all of it he can. He has rewritten the class he's teaching.  He has made friends with military buffs all over the world in Russia and China and they send him images of the vehicles that they can get.  He has added images and dimensions of Russian and Chinese vehicles that nobody in our military has ever had clear photos of before :)  He recently got an award for his rewritten curriculum and was just assessed this week for teacher of the quarter and teacher of the year here :)  Sort of a sad parody of the equipment that the Army vs. Air Force gets, he's backing all this up on a 2002 iPod that probably has some sand in it :)  Other than space and "refurbished", are there other differences to consider between the two?

software differences that most people would never notice.

"Refurbished" is really not true in this case. What it really means, most likely, is "stock we couldn't sell before we introduced the new model." See David Pogue talk about it here.

Basically, refurbished tends to be a great deal when you would otherwise buy new (same warranty etc.)

    I'm glad you asked.

New Kids On The Block Christmas Album

I know, I know.  And NO I do not listen to the new stuff.  But I was a little girl with two older sisters when 5 boys from my neighborhood made it big.  I even got Jordan's autograph when he was playing basketball at the park on my street (lost that one though).

Every Christmas when we decorate the tree we bust this album out for nostalgia purposes.  There's nothing quite like having a "funky funky Christmas".
