Josh Marshall points to Bill Moyers' commentary on the brouhaha over Hillary's LBJ/MLK comments. Moyers also provides a wonderful tribute to both LBJ and MLK. Watch it. A great piece.

    He eloquently put the whole issue into the correct perspective. What a shame that Bill Moyers isn't the standard fare of what Americans see on their TVs.

    While his inclination was to to relie on his political prowess, it is implicit in this quote that MLK has convinced him the issue was larger than the presidency even with the political skills of Johnson.

    brings back strong memories of growing up in a small southern town (75% black) and the long hours of demonstrations and the violence...Wow...Wonder what MLK would think about all this today...

    for letting everyone know I am not Bill.  I am sure that people here were confused and needed you to point that out. :-) Just so ya know, I think Bill has better things to do then spend 20 minutes like I did trying to help jgarza read a few simple sentences.  His audience is a tad different.

    My point remains.  I said the exact same thing last night.  And I am glad that Josh marshall posted it on TPM - I missed the show last night.

    so do go read what I posted in the MKL thread Big Tent posted about 6 or 8 posts back. You will see I am right.  I didnt see anyone on these boards say anything like it so maybe I am no Bill Moyers, buit I am the closest to him on this of anyone on these boards.

    I like you - I guess I wonder at why it is okay that other peoople here point out their comments about something in the past and you took exception to my doing so from last night - I adore Bill Moyers and was tickled pink we were in sync.  

    But I will let this go here.  The idea that I actually bothered to waste my time last night is what is bugging me - not anything you say.  I need to get a new teevee and go back to listening to PBS.  This is a very limited range of discussion and it gets frustrating to read the same closed minded nonsense (excluding the obvious few and Jeralyn for whom I have nothing but admiration).

    About what? That I believe Moyers has greater influence than you?

    As I said, with all due respect, Moyers is a star, with a long and well deserved reputation, you are a blogger on TL and whatever you said, as right on as it was, does not have anywhere near the power of Moyers' presentation of the same material.

    He had no choice on Civil Rights, the decision was made for him.  What was he going to do, initiate a racial war?  He did what was presented to him by OTHERS, through THEIR sacrifice, not his.  He signed some papers, he wasn't courageous, he simply did what any decent human being would.  That he couldn't do the same for the suffering Vietnamese, well, one can only hope for a little suffering in the afterlife.  We should stop raising common decency, when committed by wretches, to the level of virtue.  That said, interesting that Hillary Clinton is, in effect, trying to quash the votes of largely poor and minority culinary workers in Nevada.

    It is widely known in history, that Johnson felt deeply about this subject and went against the gain nearly totally in his own party. He showed rare courage in a president on this subject. On other things he was a bit of a crooked politician but on this one thing he was even warned that if he did it the democratic party would be lost in the south for generations but he stated he needed to do it anyway....Read your history....(I am old enough that I lived it) It was a amazing part of our history Dadler please don't distort it...

    for NAFTA and Welfare Reform probobly assuaged, somewhat, those whom Johnsons reforms may have left vengence minded.

    That the clinton's repeatedly sold people out, who most needed our help, to maintain their hold on power is their particular cinderella story. ANd it's one thing to adopt some republican idea that will help you politicaly but is effectivly retorical, but the clintons have consistantly   taken some of the worst ideas, the tectonic issues that truly cause a plate shift. They have empowered some of the worst eliments of our system at a time when we truly needed an opposistion party.

    I won't venure to guess how old you are, but if you think the 90s were a good time for progressive values, you might want to reconsider your party affiliation. Most of the indicators from that period are bad, real bad and much of it is a result of not being an opposistion party. The clintons ran the party.
