The Homeland Security Department scrapped an ambitious anti-terrorism data-mining tool after investigators found it was tested with information about real people without required privacy safeguards.

Warner Decision Not To Run Suspcisious (none / 0) (#1)
by Saul on Mon Sep 03, 2007 at 01:16:21 PM EST
Food for thought.   I feel that there is more to Senator Warner's decision not to run again than meets the eye.  I think it might have gone something like this.  Warner  is a very influential republican on the hill.  Started showing his separation on the Iraq war since he was up for re election in 08.  Republicans are afraid that if he speaks against the war other republicans will listen and follow.  So the republican party is  now  aware that Warner could be a super influential power against the president.   The party or the administration tells Warner, if you run you will upset the cart on how the rest of the republicans think on Iraq.  For the sake of the party and on how we think on the war just don't run. By doing this you would perform a greater service for your party and country than serving another term.  Either there was some pressure  by the party or the administration on Warner or Warner came to this thinking on his own.  I could be all wet and maybe Warner isn't running because he is  just plain tired. I would like to believe that but none of these guys do things for the right reason.  Just my 2 cents and my suspicion.

    Jack Goldsmith Speaks (none / 0) (#3)
by squeaky on Tue Sep 04, 2007 at 10:19:21 AM EST
Suddenly, Gonzales and Card came in the room and announced that they were there in connection with the classified program. "Ashcroft, who looked like he was near death, sort of puffed up his chest," Goldsmith recalls. "All of a sudden, energy and color came into his face, and he said that he didn't appreciate them coming to visit him under those circumstances, that he had concerns about the matter they were asking about and that, in any event, he wasn't the attorney general at the moment; Jim Comey was. He actually gave a two-minute speech, and I was sure at the end of it he was going to die. It was the most amazing scene I've ever witnessed."

After a bit of silence, Goldsmith told me, Gonzales thanked Ashcroft, and he and Card walked out of the room. "At that moment," Goldsmith recalled, "Mrs. Ashcroft, who obviously couldn't believe what she saw happening to her sick husband, looked at Gonzales and Card as they walked out of the room and stuck her tongue out at them. She had no idea what we were discussing, but this sweet-looking woman sticking out her tongue was the ultimate expression of disapproval. It captured the feeling in the room perfectly."

    Hit Iran where it hurts

Democratic presidential hopeful takes a get-tough stance against tyrant of Tehran

    By BARACK OBAMA

Americans need to come together to confront the challenge posed by Iran. Yet the Bush administration and an anonymous senator are blocking a bill with bipartisan support that would ratchet up the pressure on the Iranian regime. It's time for this obstructionism to stop.

The decision to wage a misguided war in Iraq has substantially strengthened Iran, which now poses the greatest strategic challenge to U.S. interests in the Middle East in a generation. Iran supports violent groups and sectarian politics in Iraq, fuels terror and extremism across the Middle East and continues to make progress on its nuclear program in defiance of the international community. Meanwhile, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has declared that Israel must be "wiped off the map."

Crooks & Liars is right on target to note that this is exactly the same BS rhetoric that got us into Iraq.

    This is nuts.

    If Obama's Position Is Balanced... (none / 0) (#6)
by squeaky on Wed Sep 05, 2007 at 05:19:26 PM EST
So is Bush's.  I don't see the piece as decent or balanced in any way. It is almost identical to Bush's pumping up against Iraq prior to the war.

I am quite surprised by this nonsense coming from Obama.
