S.F. to Pot Dispenaries: Fatten Up Those Baggies

Via Stop the Drug War, an employee of the San Francisco Health Department has sent a letter to a marijuana dispensary warning them not to skimp on the amount pot it places in its ounce baggies.

Seems like the dispensary was rounding out an ounce to 28 grams when it's really 28.35 grams. From the letter:

It has come to my attention that some MCD's [medical cannabis dispensaries] are using the incorrect equivalent conversion between grams and ounces. You must use 28.35 grams/ounce, not 28 grams/ounce for all cannabis sold by weight. The law behind this is in the State Business and Professions Code, which is typically enforced by Weights and Measures (State Dept of Agriculture). As they currently are not addressing weights and measures issues regarding cannabis clubs, the City's MCD Inspection Program will enforce this requirement.

Please feel free to share this with any club operator (I do not have email for most operators).

Bottom line: More bud for the buck.

    Until Prohibition is over anyway:

During his eight-year stint as a cop inTexas--two of them as head of narcotics for the Gladewater Police Department--Barry Cooper made over 800 drug-related arrests, impounded more than 50 vehicles, and seized at least $500,000 in cash and assets. He worked with everyone from the DEA to the FBI to border patrol, earning a reputation as the "best narcotics officer in the state, and perhaps the country," according to a former colleague. So what did Cooper, now married with four kids, learn from his experience?

"The war on drugs is an utterly losing proposition," he tells Radar. "We caused more harm breaking up families to put non-violent drug offenders in jail than the drugs ever did. And for what? To eradicate 1/10th of a percent of drugs on the street."

You're hanging with someone who defends persons accused of drug crimes and opposes the war on drugs and writes to criticize our drug laws. It has nothing to do with personal activity.

there are some odd and bad aspects to living here, but on the whole, it's this kind of news item that shores up my happiness at being here.

Did I mention we have a really good public defender here, too?  Oh and our city attorney rocks in terms of going after bad landlords.

But really, on the medical marijuana issue, it's a no brainer and I'm glad they're getting support.

28 grams on the nose is kind of the de facto "black market ounce".  Old habits of prohibition must be hard to break.

Another hidden cost of prohibition....customers getting ripped for the .35

.35 goes into a 1/4 ounce about 20 times. Could you get 20 joints out of a 1/4 ounce?

you're a little off good buddy.

.35 divided by 4 is .087 grams short per 1/4 oz.

not a proper joint. Id call it a negligible amount when dealing in ounces, but it adds up over time I guess.

I personally have been chained and caged for less than .35, so it's not a negligible amount to John Law:)

Yeah - enough to justify a "war", "on drugs". Just not sure who is on the drugs.

When I was in college, a friend, who was known to sell a little pot now and then, decreed that he was selling "metric ounces," which equalled 25 grams!

if i recall correctly, an ounce is equal to 28.375 grams, not .35. most people used to carry little scales with them, just to be sure they weren't getting ripped off.

back in my bad old college days, a 25 gram oz would probably have gotten your butt kicked.
