    Because (5.00 / 1) (#2)

    why is Diana's so special?
For many english women she was not just another rich person but a real human that bucked the royal stuffy image. She was seen as a renegade and inspiring for many woman.

Friends of mine, who are quite unroyal and haters of pomp, slept outside the church before her funeral.

She was not a Paris Hilton.

I understand the enchantment with Diana (none / 0) (#6)

I just want to point out it's a fantasy. Diana was no renegade, and no role model. She was treated prettily shabbily by that imbecile she married and the freak show of a family she married into. I do feel some sympathy for her because of that, but at the same time, she did choose that life. And lots of people marry imbeciles and suffer for it, and we don't make a big song and dance about it.

Jeralyn mentions Diana's work with landmines. Hands up who knows the name of the woman and the organization that won the 1997 Nobel peace prize for their work that resulted in the international treaty to ban landmines (which, by the way, the US has not signed)?

See what I mean? I doubt there will be an all-star concert celebrating the lives of these people, transmitted live by NBC any time soon.

With all due respect to Diana, who I'm sure was a very nice person, her public persona is totally a creation of the celebrity industry.

but of all the unnecessary deaths that occur, why is Diana's so special? Her only claim to fame was that she married money, and obscene amounts of it at that. Her death was caused by her being in a car without wearing a seat belt, with a drunk driver driving far too fast in a tunnel.

I wish we could have a concert like this in honor of all victims of war.

that was hardly her only claim to fame (none / 0) (#3)

do some research on the amount of charitable work she did, with AIDS and landmines among other things.

In Britain, she was known as the Queen of People's Hearts.

It's not her death they are celebrating as special, it's her life.

"charity work" is not a particularly demanding occupation. Diana's life was quite unexceptional.

who tried to use her position to do some good, but I also think Al's points (most of them) are very well taken.

What is this overwhelming need to mythologize and romanticize the Princess Dianas (aside from the obvious ruling class p.r windfall) at the expense of Whats-Her-Name? who did most of the work in the trenches in order to have land mines banned? Maybe it's because Beverly Hills 90210 is more captivating -- we're constantly told -- than Kentucky Hills 90210.
