Sopranos Final Season: Episode 85, "The Blue Comet"

The second to last episode of the Sopranos, Number 85 is tonight: "The Blue Comet." Could they be any more cryptic?

This week, the allegiance of those closest to Tony is put to the test. Meanwhile, a case of mistaken identity has serious ramifications

Update: and Spoiler Alert:

The series is going out with a gang war. Only Paulie and some schlubs from Tony's family are left. Bye to Bobby and Syl. The family's in hiding. Tony's therapist fires him as a patient.

So the big question is, does Tony get killed or busted next week in the finale? Does his family survive? If they all survive, does he leave the business?

He's wanted out all season. Remember when he said "I get it" after his peyote visions? Somehow I just don't think he'll be killed next week. But he could be the lone survivor. Question: Will Malfi return or was tonight her finale?

from this one.  I don't believe the show will end with Tony's family being killed next week, it would leave too bad a taste.  But with Malfi firing him as a patient, Bobby and Syl and Chris gone and the family in a separate hiding place and the FBI agent telling him he's on tap for being busted, I get the sense Tony is not going to die, just end up alone. It beats ending up with Paulie.

The comment by Phil that Tony hasn't ever really done time in "the can" also makes me think he'll end up in jail.  Phil really is the one who deserves to die.  Tony at least is human and has some normal feelings.

Phil kills Paulie, Tony kills Phil but not before Phil plugs him a couple of times. This all happens as the bust is about to go down.

In the ambulance on the way to the hospital as Tony starts crashing he flashes back to his peyote sunrise and whispers, "I get it," and smiles as the screen fades to black.

    "I get it."

It's left up in the air whether he lives or dies.

Of course, I could be wrong.

I predict, depending on ultimate storyline, Malfi will be back to either watch Tony doing the perp walk or to hear news of the shooting via TV.

    Or she visits his gravesite.

    Can't wait.

Wasn't it creepy in the toy store last night?  Once he sat there cradling that Toy train for more then a few seconds you knew he was toast.

Wasn't that David Chase with the kids?

You knew it was coming and then you thought maybe they're just teasing me but then the guys entered the store and you saw the writing on the wall.

That's why this show is so great.  You know, you think, then you think again then it happens.

How many times has somebody almost died?   Paulie on the boat with Tony.

The characters walk such a fine line.  So close to death all the time.

Great stuff.  Can't wait for the finale.

Tony's whole crew are going out like a bunch of slack-jawed pansies, killed off before they even know there is a war going on, haggling over vintage electric trains, and fumbling for their guns in the glove compartment, just pathetic.  And the whole plot line for the grand finale is so blatantly obvious, Anthony's going to go down in a blaze of glory, not with not with his rivals in the family, but with Muslim terrorists, anybody can see that coming because the writers keep throwing in these pathetically obvious teasers with the feds.

I suppose this their idea of some kind of lame poetic justice, or perhaps just cheap irony on the part of the writers, letting the Soprano family go out with a pathetic whimper instead of the bang the audience deserves. I realize that is the way most punk mobsters leave the world, but this is supposed to be entertainment not reality, and what the show has deteriorated into is definitely not entertaining from where I sit. I suppose it's too late for somebody to put a hit on the series writers because they long ago finished writing these scripts on toilet paper in the Jon while taking a break from their real work.

Malfi will be back following a tragedy for Tony -- the demise of A.J. is certainly the most likely.  She has got to be made to feel guilty for firing Tony as a patient due to some junk science study that says criminals can't be helped from therapy, they only use it to become more criminal.

Her falling for that and bowing to her peer pressure at the shrink dinner was so out of character for her.

bothered me to no end. Not only was her abrupt termination of Tony completely out of character and completely unprofessional but that whole dismal dinner conversation where Elliot leaks Tony's identity was over-the-top, not to mention that the study they were talking about is years old...not exactly a news flash in psychiatric circles.
Next week, I think that the terrorist story line could come into play. Chase has been dropping hints in the last few episode. Maybe A.J. decides to copy techniques he's been reading about on those web pages and follow in Daddy's footsteps.
However, predicting Chase is kinda impossible, so I'll tune in next week like everyone else.
