Surging Toward Death

The president's surge strategy has been nothing but bad news for the troops he's placed in harm's way:

Five U.S. troops died in weekend attacks, pushing the death toll past 100 in the deadliest month for American forces since December, the military said Monday as a wave of violence battered Iraqi civilians including a suicide bombing at a Shiite funeral. ...

The rising toll for U.S. soldiers also pointed to a potentially deadly trend: More troops exposed to more dangers as they try to reclaim control of Baghdad.

    Iraqi government is going on a 2 month vacation. (5.00 / 1) (#1)

Now I thought that the surge was to give the government time to get its act together while we secured Baghdad.

Where is the urgency for the Iraqi government?

I guess our troops will continue to die while the gov officials are keeping cool or whatever they do.

Would someone please ask Dana or the President if timetables and benchmarks might get the government of Iraq to show some urgency?

the reporting as I do?  I just read on yahoo that Democrats along with Republicans are meeting with the President today on the Iraq Supplemental.  The story claims it is to craft a compromise even as our caucus grows more fractious on the topic.  Is our caucus really growing more fractious?  Is it possible that the challenge this is providing is uniting and strenthening our caucus more than it even was on last election day?  How do they know what they type anymore is even close to true these days?  I wish they would put away the crystal balls that haven't worked in five years!  I think they are full of it.

And all the reports take the approach that "Democrats now have to weigh concessions," when in fact, if what Patty Murray said on Newshour after the veto is true, Dems are going into their meeting with Bush saying to him that the onus is now on him to put forward a new plan that shows a change of course with more chance of success and that therefore they can accept.

will spin it that way to help Bush hold onto as much of his base as possible.

on the part of that many reporters, editors, headline writers...

I'm wondering why there aren't higher-profile Dems than Murray very loudly taking that approach in front of the TV cameras. With Bush at 28%, if they can't get in his face now this particular bunch of them never will.

overtly purposeful that any of them would admit to. But fear of losing their jobs can be a powerful motivator. Examples.

makes much more sense to me.

    As Alterman says:

in the face of a 40 year political onslaught by a well-funded, well-disciplined, and ultimately insatiable right-wing assault on reason, the Washington establishment in general and the Democratic elite in particular have often caved in

It's easier to blame the boogeyman working against you, harder when a good part of the fault lies with the failures of your own team. But recognizing the truth is the start of fixing it.

But there is both going on. And part of the reason for the cave in is fear of how the media will portray them.
